View Full Version : Important extended desktop issue

Since installing ActivInspire, I have spent a while trying to resolve the following:
When extended desktop is correctly setup, calibrate will give the option of calibrating the second display (my board), but will then only control the pointer within my first display (on the laptop screen).
Infact, there appears to be a driver problem because opting to calibrate screen one requires the user to calibrate their laptop screen (impossible - the pen won't work on your computer!!)
We will need a speedy resolution to this problem as the extended desktop is an invaluble feature that many of us use day to day. Especially important is the fact that we can run our dislplays at different resolutions (my projector only runs effectively at 800 * 600 - my laptop is 1024 * 800).
I realise there are a few threads already detailing this problem, but if it's affecting you - please bump this so that we can draw attention to it.

There is a workaround solution for this issue (on Windows).
Rather than using the 'Calibrate' menu option within ActivManager, run the following calibrate program...
C:\Program Files\Activ Software\ActivDriver\Calib.exe

Will that fix allow extended monitor though (the mutliple monitor feature on ActivStudio)? I am another person who really needs it since I need to keep other applications open on desktop that sometimes pop up msgs.

In this setup, ActivInspire can be dragged onto the second monitor and then used interactively on the whiteboard.
Your primary display (eg your laptop screen) will contain your main desktop elements where for example Outlook pop up messages will appear.

Multiple monitors does not work in Inspire as it does in AS. This is an absolute showstopper for me. Anything that pops up on your screen (from Inspire) goes to the primary. Dragging to the second screen is too limited to be useful.
I can't see moving to Inspire until this is fixed.
I had hoped that version 1.2 would include support for multiple monitors but it does not appear too...:(

I will try the .exe program on Tuesday...
Karl - does this mean we can't effectively run Inspire separately to our desktop?

It is not effective to run Inspire on the secondary monitor in Windows. Too many windows/controls in Inspire default to appear on the primary monitor which is not accessible from the board. AS has very nice controls allowing you to select where various things pop-up, Inspire sends everything to the primary which requires that you "drag" them over to the board, using the mouse on the computer.
I hope that this is fixed soon.

That's not too useful. :(
I really like the look of Inspire - it has a much more user-friendly 'front end' than AS. Oh well, let's hope a solution is on its way...

I agree Inspire is the future... I hope they solve this soon also.

Could someone let me know if the problem that I am having is related to this issue or if not - if you know of a workaround I'd appreciate some info.
Problem: running ActivInspire on a PC (USB connection to ActivBoard) using an Epson ceiling mounted projector wirelessly - when I try to use the Desktop Tools Wonderwheel - it only appears on my laptop screen and not on the ActivBoard, but if I happen to use the Activpen in the vicinity of where the Desktop Tools Wonderwheel would be on the Activboard, it will pick up my actions at the ActivBoard.

Gloria,
It does not sound like the same issue. In your case, the screen and the projector should be showing exactly the same image but are not.
At a guess, I would suspect your wireless projector. It may not be updating the screen when the small Desktop Tools Wonderwheel icon is drawn.
Two ideas:
1 - If you try to make large changes on the screen it may update the entire screen including the Desktop Tools Wonderwheel.
2 - Can you connect to the projector directly to see if it is a wireless communication problem?
Good Luck,

Karl,
Thanks for your suggestions - yes I can connect to the projector directly and will try this on Tuesday (school holiday Monday) and see what happens.
Again thanks!

Karl,
I just tried connecting directly to the projector and it seems to work the way I'd expect so that implies that it is a wireless problem? Any thoughts as to more specifics on what I might be able to do to correct?
Thanks!

Gloria,
I have not used a wireless projector so I'm not sure exactly what to do. I think wireless projectors all compress the display data to be able to send the image info via a radio signal. Perhaps you could adjust the settings for the wireless communications.
A call/web search to Epson might be in order.
