Is anyone using this edition of the software? If so, I'm curious as to what for as I am searching for some kind of application for it.

We attempted to use it for staff to prepare materials away from the classroom and then realised that it offered none of the useful tools at all, so was quickly uninstalled to make way for the full edition. Promethean offered a Developer's edition for this purpose but they seem to be constantly delaying its release.

Yeah, the full edition is so much better for preparing resources. Still looking for uses for SE though!
Can't wait for DE. Understandable how long it might take to develop, though.

Hi
I know I am primary [clap] [clap] .....
BUT to allow limited functionality to students means that they can begin get their head around the software without some of the licensing requirement that would be needed to allow anybody/everybody access to the software.
If this piece of software (SE) was loaded onto all the pcs in a suite for example maybe students could prepare flipcharts as part of presentations to other students. In the same way that powerpoint is suggested as ways of engaging reluctant "writers" and shy presenters in a school situation, they could work collaboratively to present their findings/topics/research/opinions and then load this flipchart onto the host pc/laptop of the ACTIV board where additional tools/functionality could then be introduced. Using a flipchart to engage their peers would be fantastic, because lets face it Powerpoint is best used with a projector and pc!
Now the other way would be to say to students "download this version from the internet"
http://www.prometheanworld.com/uk/html/customer_care/software/studio2SE.shtml
and if you are in a school where homework can be accessed remotely the SE will "read" flipcharts created in AS2 and so there is potential there too.
Maybe this is expecting a bit much in terms of what stage schools are at in offering this type of "remote" homework/access. BUT there are a significant number of Promethean staff who are teachers and sometimes offering services which offer a vision for the future or opportunity of exploiting technology is where we need to be. That sounds a bit smug - I mean it to be a genuine reflection of where we hope to be in terms of offering support to schools.
I would love it if you tried any of the above and came back with some feedback.
OR am I just destined to go back to Primary where I belong :D :D :D +wave+

WOW. Thank you Margaret! I am particularly interested in the whole "remote" homework side of things - well worth looking into.
One of the biggest problems I've found is transferring the files from the student's PC to the board itself. I'm going to start convincing tutors to move away from PowerPoint and try out the SE. Only problem is that there isn't any cool transition effects and the learners seem to love them :(

SE has been designed mainly that it will run anything created in PE (or DE). Thus instructor created flipcharts may be viewed and used in any location the student has access to a PC with SE installed.
Flipcharts may be emailed or accessed via a network or even via USB memory sticks. They may be used for homework, revision or assessment.
As far as flipchart creation is concerned, yes of course, the functionality isn't there in SE, but students are able to put text and images on flipchart pages and of course if they want to present their work, open it up in PE on the ACTIV board and have access to all the bells and whistles during the presentation.
Hope this helps

I've used SE with a partially sighted student with a laptop. I give him the file for the lesson at the start using a memory stick, then he can view the file as we use it. I give him an updated copy at the end of the lesson. Unfortunately the magnifier doesnt work in SE, but he tells me he can cope well enough. I didn't want to give him the full version because of licence issues.

I think this licensing issue needs looking at. PE is a fantastic piece of software that we have used extensively with pupils. I think there should be some allowance that if a class has a whiteboard running PE, pupils can work on PE on their invidual computers. It's a shame that licensing issues could mean that pupils don't get the full benefit from this fantastic piece of software which has turned out, at least for us, to be much more than just a tool for teachers (including the flipchart recorder and all the other tools).
I manage an ICT Advanced Learning Centre, which means pupils have more or less had a whiteboard to themselves, hence no licensing issue. I can see why it would be a problem for traditional class situations, though! In any case, pupils with moderate learning difficulties have mastered PE, in addition to our more able pupils :)

Thought that was a pertinent comment re: licensing issues. My pupils, who are all MLD secondary age, are more than capable of making their own flipcharts with various hyperlinks in Activ 2 PE, which is installed on my computer and linked to the Activ board. So why don't Promethean revise their licensing of this software as my students are keen to develop their own resources when they are working on the PC's which I have in my room. I have seen the student edition and showed it to the pupils but they preferred to use the PE edition. I think the PE edition is a fantastic piece of software and so do my pupils. Surely we're about raising levels of achievement and it seems such a pity that a valuable tool as this is limited in use due to the licence restriction.
