View Full Version : Using local files in stead of embedding?

I've been fiddling with Inspire for well over a month now and really love it. I however am encountering a problem which I can not solve and did not find on the forums so here goes:

I want to use files in my Inspire flipcharts, which are not embedded. We want to develop the same content but with different images embedded in the jpg's we place in the flipchart. Whatever I try, I keep get on getting the jpg's I place on each page of the flipchart to be embedded. I've tried using the action "Link to file" (using the dutch version, do not know how it's named in the english one) but then it refers to the file once I click on it.

Long story short, I want the images we use in the flipchart, to refer to a location on a harddisk or USB stick, much like websites work (index.htm takes all images from the local defined images folder).

Is this possible in Inspire?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex,

What you are trying to do is currently not implemented within Inspire. But it's a great idea and one for consideration.

The closest you can get to this is to define links to external images and have these as actions on other objects on the page. So this means that the images would not appear on the page, you would have to click on an action object in order to view the external image in a seperate window.

Having said this, it is possible to do what you suggest using video files. So a page can 'pull in' external video links and display them in situ.

Thanks for the quick response Nigel!

Aye, I discovered that it does link to "local" video files and you can add links to local files, but my employer really looked forward to the feature I described.

You mentioned "But it's a great idea and one for consideration." Is this something we can expect to be implemented shortly in an upcoming version or am I to impatient if I state it like this ;)

Anyhow, thanks again for the quick response and I'll be scavanging the boards the upcoming months because I'm very anxious to see this option implemented! It would help us a great lot!

Cheers,

How about using the Camera Tool to snapshot the jpg image.
Create the Action on the image-of-the-image..
The files that are linked to must have the same name/pathway. Maybe you can have alternative Folders with identically-named 'sets' of images - rename a Folder to make it the one being used for the current unit of work?

Thanks for the thoughts Hilary,

This might actually work, but the projects we're working on have roughly 500+ images spread over 4-5 spreadsheats. The ammount of work as you can see would almost be of biblical proportions.

Besides, the people who are going to work with the flipcharts have a "I want to do a minimal ammount of effort to teach what I want tought" and work in a linear way, using actions to achieve this is a detour we'd like to avoid.

Our most benefitial option, is to wait for a future version in which this is implemented. Thanks non the less though :)
