It is my pleasure and privilege, as the Product Manager for ActivInspire, to welcome you all to the amazing, fantastic, awe-inspiring new software from Promethean.

HUGE thanks to all of you who have given us so much wonderful feedback and input into the software over the last few months. We really couldn't have done this without you. [clap]

I hope that you will all be downloading the software from March 2, and taking advantage of the benefits ActivInspire can offer. Teaching and learning will never be the same again!

I'm sure I don't need to encourage you to contribute to the forum...we will be kicking off a few threads about the upgrade process just to give you a helping hand.

I also am excited BUT it still doesn't work for me. I am a Macbook user and it crashes every time I open it. With the Beta I was successful some of the time when I was connected to a board BUT not when disconnected and at home wanting to make my Lessons. One thing I did do before I downloaded the NEW Inspire was to uninstall the beta. That still didn't help. Please advise where I need to go for technical help.

I am running ActivInspire on a mac pro and also have parallels with Vista and running on that also with no problem!

Go for it - download the released version and install hopefully you will be fine - otherwise :-

Please post your issues via the knowledgebase - that is the best route - either support help you or if they cant the issue gets escalated to the developers.

I am downloading from the US site. The speed is fluctuating quite a bit, centred around 50kB/sec. A typical speed for me for a large download is about 250kB/sec, so it is a tad slow. But I'll get there!

Do you have a hub or a slate with you - any hardware that you can connect to the computer at home? If so download the personal version and install and run ActivInspire - it will allow you to upgrade to full version and send you back to website for your new serial number.

Hi there.

Have you managed to run the terminal command provided http://www.prometheanplanet.com/gserver.php?show=conWebDoc.7024&outputArea=2 <- here? After the image that shows the strings within the file is a command that can be entered in the Terminal application. The command should be :

Open –e /library/application\ support/promethean/activstudio3/.registrationData

This should open in the text edit application for you

For what it's worth, I just finished downloading from the US site, and it took less than three minutes. I'm running on an 802.11N wireless network.

I also just installed it on my MacBook running OS 10.5.6, and it started up just fine.

Ahh... Its a long shot, but could you copy/paste this version...

I notice that the one you post... Open –e /library/application support/Promethean/activstudio3/.registrationData does not have a \ at the end of application. Not sure if its a post problem for the forum that have caused it, so just wanted to make sure.

For those who don't have your software, I found my serial # under the help selection from main menu. Go to "Help" then "About ActivStudio". You'll see a your serial # there and you will also see and be able to copy and paste if you select details.

I was able to install the Linux version via Synaptic with ease in about 5 minutes. I installed the personal edition at home. The camera tool won''t allow me to take a snapshot of anything but my flipchart page.:mad: Rather useless I'd say. Does this not work in the personal edition or not at all?

I think I am having the same problem. This is the second time I've tried having had the problem once and uninstalling and reinstalling. I am using intel core 2 Duo iMac 2.8 GHz running 10.5.6.

I am also attaching the crash report.

I didn't see a serial number on my Mac Activstudio either. I think it depends on the version you were running. Fortunately, I had my old software box at home!

Do you have an Activhub (like the one that comes with the new Activotes, Activexpression or Activslate? Perhaps that would work. (I was going to try that next if I couldn't get me hands on a serial number.)

This file could be hidden hence why you can't find it. However another way of opening it is to

Open terminal
Enter the following command:
Open –e /library/application\ support/promethean/activstudio3/.registrationData

For Primary users change activstudio3 to activprimary3

Yes, from my understanding, the Personal Editon will allow you to create flipcharts that you can use at school (assuming they have upgraded to ActivInspire.) ActivInspire files have a .flipchart extension and Activstudio cannot open them. But vice-versa, ActivInspire can open any .flp files (created with Activstudio or Activprimary.)

ActivInspire Personal Edition will allow you to convert Smart notebook files.

The Personal Edition doesn't have all of the authoriing capabilities and tools as the Professional version does so if you work at a school with Promethean Activboards, I would get ahold of a serial number and upgrade.

I got majorly burned the last time I jumped on an update due to the fact I was running Leopard when it first came out. It took months for an update and I was without AS for the entire time.

Obviously I am being more tentative to download something new this go around. I need an HONEST opinion about using ActivInspire on a MacBook running 10.5.6. I am currently in presenting mode and can't afford another huge CRASH.

Please let me know what you think....I am not trying to be negative as a matter of fact I can't wait to play with the new software but I am just testing the waters first this time. Any help you can give me would be great.????

From the Finder menu bar go to Go>Utilities>Terminal -- that opens a Terminal window that lets you type (or paste) in commands.

That open command string pasted into the terminal window after the command prompt will instruct the mac to open the registration data file in TextEdit. :-)

I too had been burned the last time Activstudio was updated and was down for months but I can tell you that in my case Inspire has NOT touched Activstudio 3.6. As soon as I was having trouble opening Inspire I checked and made sure I could open and use Activstudio 3.6 and "all is well". You might have better luck than me hopefully in using Inspire.

Well I'm still smiling...

Beta expired with a poof - no sign of it - apart from a message in a bottle (sort of).

I am just so pleased that the download worked so well (windows version) and that I was up and running with my new version flipcharts for this morning.

I applaud the fact that this is a free upgrade for existing users - the temptation to ask for a contribution must have been ever present - but it is good business sense in the long run. The decision to make a cross platform vehicle was a very brave, forward looking one - and there are obviously some platform specific resources that will have to be sacrificed. Adieu wmfs!

Quite a few alterations have been made from the beta stage and there are still obviously a number that fell just short of this release date. We were on ActivPrimary 3.18 (I think) so the continuing policy of improving is just part of the Promethean way of life - long may it continue.

The feeling that real teachers have contributed to the development is such a big, positive asset - a smart move indeed.

Well done everyone - no rest for the wicked - onto the next release.

I have found it is much slower than ActivStudio. I really like your new additions to the program. I like your help file and the printer link. Maybe I don't know about another way to do some things. For example, I would like to know if there is a way to draw a line in ActivInspire without having to draw a line segment and then go to properties and changing the end caps. If I have to do this every time it will really take up some time. I guess you could draw a line with the end cap and put it on your toolbar. I liked selecting a line with the arrow and just drawing. I am finding this with many other components as well. Thanks for your time. It is fun to play with, but I can't use it for school until they adopt the upgrade. I guess I will know what I am doing by then.

are you entering your v3 serial number?
If so then you need to go back to the website & follow the links for "have existing v3 serial number" & enter it into the website & you will be emailed an inspire serial number which will get you into the app!

Help please - downloaded Inspire adn installed successfully and have been using the ActivPrimary style version. Has suddenly switched to ActivStudio version and cannot find a way to switch back to the Primary version. Can anyone advise please, have checked help and online help[, cannot find any answers!

Really enjoying the new software but I can't seem to find the page browser!! I can see the object,notes,votes and actions browsers but the first two that I can see on Scotts tips (super as usual Scott) are missing. I am on the primary version - does that make a difference or do I have to edit my profile or something. Sorry if this is a silly question but it is baffling me at the moment!

I have read through the posts on this thread and have not seen any mention of difficulties of running ActivInspire and ActivStudio on the same computer (PC with Windows XP). My district is reluctant to put both programs on computers until they know if there are any difficulties. I do have both programs on my home computer. Inspire is running on Vista :mad: but I have had some difficulties with it on my home computer. Just wondering if I should go ahead and strongly ask for ActivInspire to be put on my school computer.

What I did play with in Inspire I liked, but not sure I want to give up the comfort/ease that I had just attained with V3. Summer break is coming soon so that would give me plenty of time to learn Inspire.

Yes, you can open ActivStudio and ActivPrimary flipcharts with ActivInspire, but once you can them the ActivInspire, they'll have a new extension (.flipchart vs the original .flp) so you won't be able to open the in ActivStudio or ActivInspire. So keep a back-up copy!

When working on any new updates, it would be helpful to have the printing section updated so that page notes can be printed on same page as the slide. It is hard when they are printed at the end.

Our district has 180 boards and teachers involved in the CFF initiative. We want to update all of our activstudio licenses to activinspire during the summer. Obviously this is a huge undertaking and our IT department would like to do this in an efficient manner. Can we use the same license # to update to activinspire since we already have all the licenses for the boards/older versions?

I really like the software .Much more intuitive interface. Text and shapes SO much easier to deal with and a proper rubber!!!! (but still have the magic ink option - genius!
Love the built in profiles for different teachers and the way the toolbar adds things as you use them.
Hoping there will be a search resource folder option soon as that is a bit frustrating.

When will boards ship with ActivInspire, I thought it would be after May 1? However we just ordered and received 64 boards still with ActivStudio. I have staff members that want to install ActivInspire on their home computers to play with this summer and it would be nice to have an install DVD to send them home with. Thanks.

Hi everyone:

I have been playing with ACTIVinspire and must say it is pretty cool thus far.

We at our school have noticed one major thing "missing", or maybe we are just not using this correctly.

We frequently use the desktop flipchart from ACTIVstudio, but we cannot find it on the inspire version. The best we are able to get is the annotations, but not the background. I know we can cut and paste, but it is such a nuisance to do it this way, and takes away from the flow of instruction.

We are hoping that if indeed this is not there that this will be included in future versions of Inspire. For us, the desktop flipchart was one of three major advantages that we choose to go with Promethean over Smart.

Desktop Flipchart is still available in INSPIRE. Just go to main menu > view > customize > register command and pick up desktop annotate from the presentation menu (drop down).

I too had no problem using the "Beta Test" version right up until I got the message that it had expired. Now that I have downloaded the full version and re-started my MacBook I don't see anything except my ActivStudio 3 Professional icon and nothing else! Hoping there is someone out there with an answer because I would love to begin learning how to use this new version over the summer.

I was excited about Inspire, but I am becoming frustrated the more I become familiar with the program. It would appear that Promethean left out many of the features that make the program user-friendly and kid-friendly (AKA: page turn effects, resource library search capabilities, ect..) I hope these issues are corrected quickly:confused:

Some of these issues are coming back. Inspire is not "finished" yet. For example, they are adding the search feature in the resource library. If you search the forum, you can often find what is yet to come. It frustrated me at first, but then I realized that we have the opportunity to give our input as to what we feel makes Inspire useful. In the end, Inspire will be more of what we as users want.

I saw a demonstration of Inspire at a Promethean Regional Users Conference in Odessa NY and got very excited. I downloaded before the second day of the conference and got to go to a hands-on session to start using it. I really love many of its features. (My only gripe is the page link feature which does not work as well for me as studio because the link does not stay with the page when you reorder things - a big problem) However, I began making all of my new material with Inspire. Once I began using it in class though it began crashing very often (generally when using the pen tool). Other teachers in my district had the same problem. It was also very slow. At this point we have all gone back to Activestudio although we rather use Inspire. I hope an update comes out very soon to deal with these issues. I am doing a summer project making materials for my classes for Promethean but I hesitat to do them in Inspire. I am a foreign language teacher and therefore put a lot of text into my charts. This is so much easier to do in Inspire so it's hard to go back to Studio.

Does anyone have any information about an update to ActivInspire? I have v 1.1 for windows. On Sunday evening I was checking the download page and the link (URL name) had a "v1.2" so I downloaded, installed, but it was still v1.1. I'm getting ready to build flipcharts for the upcoming school year and want to make sure I have the most up-to-date version. Our reseller had said there would be an update on June 1, so now I'm a little confused.

I did the 3 day train the trainer last week and was told that the update got moved back two weeks?? I came on today because all of a sudden my software is crashing for no reason. :mad: I wanted to see if this was a problem for others...

Does anyone know what features the update will have? I'm REALLY hoping for "Insert from scanner" to be added to Inspire this time around. I do the Promethean training in my district, and the teachers have told me that they don't want to move from Activstudio unless they can still insert from scanner.

I'm having issues too. Have a MacBook and just downloaded Inspire and crashed each time I try and load it. If I callobrate my board my pen will work and as soon as I try and launch Inspire it crashes and my pen stops working! Any suggestions anyone?

I am trying to insert a word document into a flipchart. I have tried the camera tool but have been unsuccessful. I have my activinspire open and then I toggle to my documents. Then I click on the camera tool and use the point to point. Then I put it on the clipboard and go back to the flipchart and paste. I save the flipchart and close the program. When I go back to retrive the flipchart, it is in the file but I am unable to open. HELP!!!

I have had a few issues, I am hoping to get some help with. The first is on my inspire flipchart the first page is blank even though in the thumbnail you can see what is on it. I have this happen on a couple different ones. And a couple of other teachers have had this happen to them as well. Another problem is that a flipchart that a coworker made on a PC at school, that was fine, is not changing one of the text box fonts to a weird jibberish font. If we go in and select all the text and change it to Arial or another font of choice it is fine, but that is what she had it at before and then all of a suddent it changed on her. She has two text boxes and one of them is fine, but the other is the one that changed mysteriously. The last issue I am having is on some of my flipcharts, when I open them up a series of computer jargon is attached to a textbox You can see the computer jargon and the textbox. It is really weird. I did find that in a text box I had the & sign and when I took it out the computer jargon dissapeard, but now i have it on another flipchart that I had downloaded previously from planet and it is also doing it.

yes, I saw it & had started to look at but couldn't find the font on any of my systems so it was on my list to try & find it & recreate. I'll have another look next week. If you could post up a flipchart that would be really helpful. Thanks.

I have the same problem that Roni is refering to. My page #2 is in the thumbnail view, but projects as a blank page.
I have attached ( I hope!) one of my flipcharts that has this problem.

We seem to be a bit behind the times as we are still using ActivPrimary3 at our school! Forgive me if these questions seem a bit basic! When we downloaded ActivPrimary 3 we kept Activprimary 2 on our system as teachers who had made flipcharts on version 2 found that they could not use them on version 3, or could not find them to open them.

Is Inspire a separate programme or will it upgrade the version 3? In other words will we have the same issue if we download inspire of teachers not being able to find their flipcharts?

I wish we never updated to ActivInspire. Typing is extremely slow (about 1 letter per second). When using the pens, I have to hold the pen to the board for about 2 seconds until the board recognizes it (if I don't my numbers/letters are just a scribbled mess). The timer has no sounds and I have to press pause 1 second before I want it to stop. Things were working well, until the "upgrade". I find I'm using the white board more and the promethean board less!

You may want to ensure that you have the latest versions of ActivInspire and the drivers. There were some speed issues on some of the earlier releases. I don't have speed issues myself and I'm on version 1.3 of ActivInspire.

I don't have any speed issues either. I know Lisa uses a mac and I'm on a PC. I'm also using 1.3. I hate that this issue is causing you to use your board less. If you are on the newest version maybe you should call support.

Hi everyone,

I have been using ActivInspire for the past 6 months and am becoming more comfortable with it all the time. I love what I am able to do with it. [clap] I am now getting ready to introduce it to the rest of our staff that have Promethean Boards (about half our staff the rest have SmartBoards - go figure) and have been some questions that I am unsure how to answer.

1) Is ActivInspire meant to replace ActivPrimary or ActivStudio eventually?????

2) Can you remove ActivPrimary from your computer if you want to only use ActivInspire or do you need ActivPrimary/Studio to be able to download all the resources available?????

3) How do I get all of our school computers that have ActivPrimary in the elementary/primary school switched over to ActivInspire? When I switched over I was sent a disc as I couldn't download it from the website and so I used that on my computer. Of course, I have to keep registering when I go to change a computer and it is always in my name instead of the schools. ????

I guess I should mention that I am located in Beijing China and so downloading is sometimes a very long process. I just want to get my teachers updated to the best. I am apparently the driving force behind a lot of this updating.

I am a Trainer in ActivPrimary for our school. Please help.

Hello everybody,

I really need some help. I had to reinstall my PC with all the softwares. Maybe something went wrong while I was installing ActivInsipre, because when I want to search for something in the Shared Resources, the white space has lost. I mean the space where you type the name of the thing that you are looking for. It was next to he Page browser but now it's not there so I can't search for files. Could you please help me asap? Thanks a million!!!

Ensure you have the latest version of ActivInspire. The first version (maybe 1.1) didn't have the resource search capability.)
