Do you know if there's a set of criteria written anywhere (Promethean Planet) for exemplary flipcharts? I'm writing a local grant to fund a group of our teachers to create or supplement existing flipcharts to 'exemplar' status.. include standards, author, title, page notes, assessment, interactivity, etc. Just wondering if the wheel has already been invented!

I've not come across any criteria other than we might use to accredit teachers at the Curriculum developer level.

However I do have a collection of flipcharts which I downloaded from Planet which I sue as exemplar flipcharts in training session. But they are a varied bunch because I need to show a spread for pupil age, subject area and teaching style. So for example I have a short punchy one which might be used as an introduction to a topic or a lesson starter, and one that covers a whole topic.

These are the my key features for an exemplar flipchart:

Fit for purpose: the flipchart covers the learning objective effectively, or if it covers a whole topic, it progresses smoothly from the introduction to conclusion. It should include some assessment opportunities. It should be involving for the pupils.

Ease of Use: it must be easy for other users to use the flipchart so it must include adequate page notes, lesson objectives, and government or state standards that apply. Any linked files (music clips, worksheets etc) must be embedded within the flipchart.

Clarity: clean consistent design so that it's obvious where to click/manipulate objects. Uncluttered pages with plenty of space for annotation by the user.

However there's no such thing as the perfect flipchart:o

If you need any more information send em a private message and I'll let let you have the names of the flipcharts I use. They should still be available on Planet.

This is a rubric I came up with to help principals rate how effectively teachers were using the Activboard and Activstudio during their teacher observations. This leans heavily towards the inclusion of Marzano strategies, which may or may not be what you are looking for. In any case, feel free to adapt this in any way you see fit. I also know I have a couple of high-quality exemplars around, and I will send those to you as soon as I locate them.

I think your project to attain standardized quality in flipchart lesson creation is a great idea, by the way.

Leslie,

What a great checklist! I am going to use it to assess my own creations, before I assess others.:)

Leslie,
Your checklist is really good. I would like to use it too. Thank you for sharing it.

This blog "What makes a good flipchart?" over in the new Promethean "Community" contains a rubric for lesson development. Here's the link!
