In my pre-flipchart days, to give students an idea of the real size of large numbers, I had a Word page containing 10,000 asterisks, grouped by 10s (10 per row, 10 rows to make a square, 10 squares per row and 10 rows of squares). If this is confusing, you can see what I mean on page 1 of the attached flp.
I wondered if it would be possible to shrink this square, and make a flipchart page containing a 10 x 10 grid of such squares. Since 10,000 x 100 = 1,000,000, this would mean that we can have 1 million dots on a single flipchart page!
Well, it turns out that it is possible, and the resulting square can be found on page 2 of the attached flp.
You need to use the magnifying tool to see the individual dots/asterisks. It takes a while for the zoom to happen - there must be a lot of processing going on.
I will leave it as an exercise for the interested reader to create page 3 of this flp, which of course is to shrink the square on page 2 and put a 10x10 grid of them on page 3 .... :)
Ditto for pages 4, 5, .... :)
Finally it is interesting to note that the flp containing 1,000,000 dots only has a file size of 10KB.
Cheers
