View Full Version : Deconstructing Text On Whole Words

Dear all
I've just found something that seems useful.
To give the illusion of splitting up a whole word using the deconstruct text tool you can do the following...

Type text (say font size 24 larger is better) eg microscope
Put spaces in the text where you want the word to break up eg micro scope
Use the text tool to select the space/s you've just put in - and reduce the front size there only as small as you can (i've used 8). The space will apparently disappear so we return to 'microscope' But as far as the deconstruct tool is concerned a space is there so a break can be made

Now when you right click on the front of the text and choose deconstruct the 'micro' will come off as a separate copy to be dragged around, and likewise if you do the same on the 'scope' part.

Cheers

I often get asked if you can do this! Thank you for sharing Tim. I have never thought of doing it that way.

Cheers,

Brilliant tip Tim

If you use the Plus and minus arrows of the text edit box you can get the gap size down to 4

A_MAZING!

I was just asked about the YESTERDAY, so I am happy to see a workable work-around! Thanks a million for sharing!

I'm still learning the wealth of Activ Studio features, so if someone would post a flipchart page so that I can understand what you're explaining, I would greatly appreciate it.:-/

Here's a try at a flipchart that shows the nifty trick.
Tim - nice idea! Thanks.

Dear all

Something to take the idea a little further...

The small font spaces used in this illusion of deconstructing text also act as a block when using the fill tool to colour in a word.

So if you have a word eg microscope (with a size 4 space between the micro and scope as described in previous posts), if you use the fill tool to colour it in, putting the tool on the 'micro' - it will only colour in the micro.

You can deconstruct the word to remove the micro.

I've been trying this with key words with pupils having to underline the suffix or prefix and then me filling it with colour and 'removing it' from the word

Interestingly, you don't seem to have go to tiny size for that to work, just shrinking the text in one part of the word seems to work, though I'm not sure if there are any limits as to how different the point size of the font has to be for this to work.

Cheers

Tim

Tim,

FANTASTIC idea about the Fill Tool! I love painting in words and then deconstructing them to make a point or a caption for a picture!

Barbara,

Mind if I borrow that page use when demonstrating this to people?
