Please excuse my ignorance because I've never heard of him before. A teacher at my school wants me to help her make a flipchart explaining this tradition to her class (she's a transplant from England). I searched both the US and UK sites by keyword with his first name and then his last name but couldn't find any lessons or resource packs. Do any of you know of any flipcharts that are already made about him or about this celebration? I found info on him on the internet but I thought I might be able to get some ideas from some previously made flipcharts. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cindy

There are in fact a couple flipcharts available on Guy Fawkes, but you'll need to set your country to "United Kingdom" and then search, as the flipcharts are tagged to the UK database.

Hope that helps.

Some websites that you might find useful!

http://www.guyfawkes.org.uk/ - Information about The Gun Powder Plot

http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/history/history.htm - Has a couple worksheets and PPT on bonfire and Guy Fawkes.

http://www.chalkface.com/products/RE/GUFA/ - Has quizzes about the Gun Powder Plot and Guy Fawkes. Could use as are (flash) or use the questions to create flipcharts to use Expression or Activote with.

Thanks to both of you. I did try searching by UK and US yesterday but I guess I did something wrong. I'll check them out after school today.

Hi Cindy,

I just typed in Guy Fawkes under key word and left the others as they were and came up with two flipcharts. Searching Bon Fire would also bring them up as well.

Great, thanks, I had searched by "Guy" and then by "Fawkes" separately. Thanks for your help!

Cindy,

Somewhere out there on the interwebs there is a video of people burning Mr. Fawkes in effigy (which I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, is part of the celebration for GF day), and I remember showing it to a MS Social Studies class when I was an intern teacher. They LOVED watching it, and wanted to learn a lot more about him, and World History for that matter, after learning that some holidays are all about a big bonfire. Wish I could remember where I found it now...

Thanks, Ben, the resources people posted here are good but I'll see if I can find that too. The teacher was SO grateful so thank you all for helping me out.

Hmmm.... 13 and 14 year olds interested in learning about burning stuff... I'm SURE that created quite a lot of learning. :D:p

Hey, we had a very good debate after that about freedom of speech vs. freedom to privacy and not having your effigy burned... We also watched the video again before we talked about propaganda, and it was a good way to "spark" their curiosity about how objects and words create mob mentalities...

Ben, I bet the kids still remember that lesson to this day because it was very meaningful to them! I wish you would've been a teacher in my MS. That reminds me, can you believe I really went to a school named after Steve Garvey?

Sorry, I only did 3 weeks with Middle School, and boy am I glad it wasn't more than that! I like it when the children are shorter than I am, or at least don't have as much facial hair as I do ;)!

And can you believe it, I have no clue who Steve Garvey is! BUT, using the new Planet Toolbar (found here (http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.15769)), I was able to highlight your entry, and search for him over the web, as well as find out there were no flipcharts on Planet about him... Who knew?

Ah, I forget how young you are. My former school district decided it's best not to name a school after a living person when he got divorced and his wife wrote a tell-all book about him.Isn't it great how you can find out almost any information in a few seconds?

Our Guy Fawkes or Bonfire Night isn't just about burning things. We have fireworks. We eat bonfire toffee (a special very dark sticky toffee), toffee apples and a cake called Parkin. Parkin is my fave.

We will be publishing a Guy Fawkes theme on Planet in November to celebrate the gun powder plot, so make sure you come back to the Themes (http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.1141) section to check it out.

If you want to find out about Parkin/Perkin cake, then have a look at the Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkin_(cake)), it gives quite a good summary.

Oh, that's great! I'll share that with the teacher I'm helping to make flipcharts on him. The Planet always comes through :)

Here you are Ben http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkin_(cake). Ideally parkin should have a sticky texture when you eat it. It's very difficult to find a good parkin these days.

..... And Yorkshire parkin is the best of all.
