I have been tasked to create a Resource Pack about Scotland. Being a smalltown girl from Georgia in the US, I'm not sure what to look for so I hope you all can contribute some ideas as well as any free to use images you have at your disposal.

Now, I know it would not be possible to put everything about Scotland in ONE little resource pack so I would like to start with the basics:

Scenes and Photos: What do you include? If twenty photos could represent all of Scotland, what would they show? Landscapes, buildings...
People: Who would be the 10-20 most important people folks should know from Scotland. Historical, political, (attention: famous folks like movie stars are hard to find in public domain!) Or just typical Scottish people that are NOT famous.
Maps: I can find some maps, but if you have any great ones you want to share, please let me know!
Symbols of Scotland: the flag, Nessie?, a kilt?, bagpipes?, a Thistle?
Feel free to post here or if too big, you can send to my e-mail address directly!

Thanks for your help!

That's a very nice idea Lisa [clap]. Maybe we can have some symbols, statues or historical scenes of scotland. First of all thanks for collecting them {}

Oh, please do. I've been researching like mad and have a bunch of stuff already.

Would really like to share the Resource Pack as a beta first via the forum before I make them live so that I don't miss anything crucial or put something in there by mistake! However, I imagine it will be much too big to attach!!!

Looking forward to hearing from them!

Here's a few ideas: Robbie Burns (I think I put something on Planet at the beginning of the year but I can send you stuff too), haggis, bashed neeps, Loch Lomond (again I've got images), Ben Nevis, Edinburgh Castle, and that lovely ruined castle on an island in a lake whose name I can't remember:eek:, Robert Louis Stevenson, the Forth Road Bridge, Alexander Fleming (discovered penicillin), James Watt after whom the unit of electricity is named, Alexander Graham Bell, Robert Dinwidde who discovered George Washington's talents, Evelyn Glennie, JOhn Paul Jones who nestablished the US navy and lots more here: http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/home/scotland/greatscots.html

Wildlife: seals, red deer, pine martens, the wild cat, the capercaillie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capercaillie) which is a threatened species.

I hope that's a start!

The Forth Rail Bridge is even more iconic than the Road Bridge. The Scottish Parliament, Wallace's monument, Jarlshoff in Shetland, Skara Brae in Orkney,

People - may I suggest Billy Connolly Ewan MacGregor John Logie Baird (inventor of Television)

Produce - whisky, tartan,

Don't forget to include somethng from the islands: the Hebrides, Orkney Isles and Shetland Isles. Skara Brae would be worth including - one of the oldest and best preserved neolithic settlements in Europe from around 3000 BC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skara_Brae

Ok folks,

I've posted this Scotland Resource Pack. I've listed it as DRAFT if anyone would like to peek through it to see if I left out anything that is a "must-have" or put something in there that I shouldn't have.

Thanks for the files and suggestions. (I did have difficulty finding copyright free images of some of the more "modern" folks you suggested but if you have some, we can add them.)

I must also add that it is quite a big download. Over 45MB!

Here's the link:

Hi Lisa. Great pack! I have had a quick look and it looks good so far. Am planning to have a closer look after dinner.

Could we also have pictures of some Scottish notes and a couple different Scottish Flags?

Cheers,

Janice

Will be happy to add them. But I wouldn't know what to look for!!!

I thought you used pounds as currency... and would there be more than one flag for a country!? (Must be showing my ignorance! Sorry!)

Not being from Scotland, I'm nowhere near an expert, but I can tell you that Scottish notes are different to ours. They are legal tender, but are sometimes not recognised by all! They have a one pound note (it is still in use, isn't it?) whereas we only have a coin. As for different flags, I would assume that it's similar to here, where different regions can have different flags. I found a couple here... www.flags.net/SCOT02.htm Now if only we could get recordings of the different accents too!! :D+wave+

Great job Lisa. I particularly like the plate of haggis, bashed neeps and chappit tatties. Here's the recipe for the tatties: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/chappittattiesmashed_85146.shtml, a recipe for the bashed neeps: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/bashedneepsmashedtur_85147.shtml, and here's the haggis recipe http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/haggis_66072.shtml. Bon appetit or as I was told 'Stick in till you stick oot!'

Lisa,

I don't know if the above would contribute to your project. It's called "Reminiscences of Scottish life and character (1908)" and can be found on the Internet Archive, an amazing (entertaining!) resource of video and audio. I haven't looked at it myself, but one reviewer said, "This is an incredible book with beautiful full color copies of paintings." It may not be what you're after, but I thought of you whan I found it.

Hi
You don't have any pictures of live haggis.
There are thre main species of Haggis and they are distinguishable by their legs.
One species of this wee beastie has two front legs musch shorter than the back. This enables it to run up and down hills at speed.
The second beastie has two short left legs and this allows it to run around hills in an anticlockwise direction.
The third species has two short legs on the right hand side and this allows them to run round hills in a clockwise direction.
Haggi are a very timid species and fear man, well wouldn't you if they boiled you up and ate them.
They have been known to attack in large numbers and are especially prone to attack any one from England!!!:D

Some great resource links from everyone! Thank you Lisa for the resource pack. Sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you but my schools go backon Monday so these last couple weeks have been very busy!

In Scotland we do use pounds and pence like England. Our coins are the same, two pounds, one pound, fifty, twenty, ten , five and one. We used to have a £1 note but they are very rare now and I am not sure they are accepted as legal tender anymore.

Our notes look slightly different then the English ones in that each bank puts out their own set of notes. Therefore, the designs differ depending on the bank they come from. I am not sure the best way of getting the pictures to use though. I am hoping to contact the Bank of Scotland about creating some resources (to go with their new Education exhibit in Edinburgh) and might be able to get them to give use images to use. It is just something that quite a few Scottish teachers have asked me for.

With regard to the flag, that was my mistake. I didn't notice that you had already put it in the pack.

As I said, Scottish schools are now back and I have quite a few school sessions coming up. This is a great thread to direct them to on the forum so we might have some more ideas come up!

Your resource packs are always fantastic Lisa! Please keep creating and sharing!

I'm probably far too late but I am from Scotland and in our school we do a big project on John Muir. He was born in a local town and has had a huge influence around the world. I definitely think he is worth mentioning particularly as he moved to Wisconsin at the tender age of 11 (He turned 11 on the boat crossing the Atlantic!)

Go to this site for more information! http://www.jmbt.org.uk/

As a Scot it is so important for other countries to see the true Scotland. Not just the tartan, haggis eating, shortbread baking side. That has it's place don't get me wrong but there is so much more to this beautiful country. I recommend going on to www.flickr.com and searching for photos of Scotland. There are some crackers on there!

Again, sorry this is late but I've only just come back to The Planet after a long time away!

You have to pity Daniel Bunker. When you live in a country where there is so little culture you find your only outlet is to belittle others. If he isn't careful "Taggart" will have another murder to solve:D

We've got Queenie Poohs and her hangers on, the Beefeaters. Still I'd much rather be in Scotland where I can still find a decent butcher who hangs his meat before selling it, and decent haggis and all that gorgeous whisky ........
