Here is a neat trick I found to download high quality, flipchart embeddable movies from YouTube.

Basically you add: "&fmt=18" at the end of the address of the youTube page

A new link now will appear (for most videos) in the bottom of the information box at the right saying "download as mp4"

Right Click thsi new link and choose "save link as.." to download... BUT NOTE: you will need to provide the file name and the extension... e.g. myvideo.mp4

If youTube is blocked in school - you can use this to download them at home.

Mark,

Does this work for the Mac as well? I tried inserting the additional info, but nothing changed in that right hand box. I assume you mean the space over here on the right in the attached picture…

Yep... It does ... Just tested.

The link appears under the place where the embed code is.

There is a better tutorial online - that also has a neat link that you can put in your browser toolbar that does it for you...

I have just tested this on my MAC (firefox) and it worked straight away.

Also found this advice......

Note that YouTube's terms of use (http://www.youtube.com/t/terms) require you "not to access User Submissions or YouTube Content through any technology or means other than the video playback pages of the Website itself, the YouTube Embeddable Player, or other explicitly authorized means YouTube may designate," so these scripts could break YouTube's policies.

There are plenty of other tools for getting at YouTube content.. but rules are rules.

Thanks for the link to the tutorial. The booklet worked perfectly.

Of course, now I have a new question. I saw a flipchart (Baseball Math, I believe) that used a video as a background. IT was a great effect.

I would love to have a video of the kids from the first day play on a page of my Back to School night flip…

My question(s): How does one play a video outside of the videoplayer app window. And then, how do you use that as a background?

( I think the answer to the first question will make the second self-apparent…)

As ever, thanks to all for all help and advice.

Bill,

I hope I can somewhat help. When you are making a video of your class, make sure you convert it or create it in a file extension that is flipchart acceptable (such as Quicktime, mp4s). If you want to embed that video onto a flipchart page , you'll need to insert it as a video placeholder and then stretch the placeholder to the entire size of your flipchart. That's how you make a video background or at least that's how I do it. :)

I just tried it with demo video. Perfect!

Yep... downloading videos using the trick suggested here... and saving the files as .mp4 is so you can embed them as backgrounds, etc.

The usual YouTube file format (.flv) does not currently embed.

I see myslef using this a lot....

Of course they are all iPod ready when downloaded this way.... so you can give them to the kids to learn from too!

Mark,
I have been trying to find the link on Youtube, but I just can't find it. I am adding the &fmt=18 at the end of the url, but still nothing. I even clicked on the School House Rock video link you posted. I have followed all of your advice, I think. Could it be because I am using Internet Explorer? I have run into issues with other web pages using it....

Any suggestions?

Lu Anne,

I had trouble as well. I was using the same set up and everything, but I just could not get it to work.

A few posts back Mark linked to a Google tutorial, and it included a link that was helpful when using the Firefox browser. If you are willing to download that (free) browser you should be able to then use the "bookmarklet" on the page Mark linked to. It works perfectly, for me at least.

Good luck. I am sure somebody here on the forums can get you through this.

Firefox is preferable over Internet Explorer anyway. It's more stable and less of a target for viruses and other hacks.

This will definitely be longer than 10.

I have downloaded Foxfire and I still am not getting the save as mp4 link. I have tried a lot of different videos and I still get nothing. Could someone send me a pic of what the link looks like? Maybe I'm not looking in the right spot (but I think I am).

I'm not even sure how often I would use this, but its killing me that I can't get it figured out!!!!

Thanks!!!!!

You drag the "bookmarklet" - (basically the link in the box) to your toolbar in Firefox (usually the toolbar just above the tabs - it might say "Getting Started" to the left of it)..then...

"Get You Tube Video" will appear as a link on that bar....

It is all set up....

Then - when you are on YouTube.,, simply click that link and the Download as mp4 file options will appear in the info box on the YouTube webpage. Just remember to give it a suitable filename when you download it... e.g. myvideo.mp4 or myvideo.mov

An alternative...

Go to www.keepvid.com

Paste the link for the YouTube page and it should offer a download as .mp4 option

Another site for the bookmarks!

I never got the Download as MP4 link either. Here's something else to try. I have Video Downloadhelper installed as an Add-On for Firefox. This add-on places an icon in your navigation toolbar that looks like three small balloons. When a video can be downloaded, the balloons will start dancing around, and you will be able to click on a drop-down menu just to its right to find a link that you can click on to download the video. The mp4 version of the file will be named video.mp4. It will end up whereever your default location for downloads is. This add-on works in Firefox 2 or Firefox 3.

To use this, find the video that you want to download. Add the &fmt=18 on to the end of the URL. After the video has started loading, the balloons should start dancing. Click on the drop-down to find the link and download it. I've done this on both a PC and a Mac, and it works the same way on both.

I've attached a screen shot so you can see what I'm talking about. I hope this helps.

Hello.

The easiest way to convert Youtube (or any .flv file) is to use Tooble. This slim and elegant program will encode the video directly from YouTube and you can embed your file into your flipchart.

The instrutions on this site are fab Mark. Now all I have to do is go to youtube and find a video, click on the new button on my toolbar (Get YouTube video) and I can download to the Resource library!

I've been looking for a simple solution like this for ages - many thanks for sharing.

:)

But... I can't embed it. I've tried inserting a video file, a placeholder, or dragging it onto the page but nothing works. Any ideas? The file type is MPEG-4 Movie.

I've checked Linked video settings and video is ticked.

Cheers,
Rosie

Does this not break copyright? What I love about YouTube is that I can find video on YouTube which I know is in breech of original copyright however whilst linking or embedding I am in the clear and YouTube are taking responsibility.

I look forward to your comments.

Yep. I think copyright was covered in the original post. Every teacher should be aware of it.

Interestingly YouTube actually has the download option as a feature of YouTube itself!

See attachment that shows the "download as .mp4 option" - but terms and conditions are terms and conditions and should be complied with.

Schoolube, teachertube and the services like Discovery and Safari offer safe content - that is unlikely to be blocked. I also like the BBC online iPlayer - but you would need to check if the school is licensed to use that in class.

I followed the instructions and was able to download a video from YouTube. However, I could not find a way to embed videos in Inspire. Am I missing anything, or does this just work with ActivStudio?

Hi Cindy,
Inspire makes it easier to embed Youtube video.
Simply grab the youtube video in its native .flv format using Firefox's download helper.
Once you do that, no need to convert the .flv .
You can embed the .flv directly into Inspire as a media file.

Hi colobill,
you can download video from youtube ad mp4 on mac

I know one named mac youtube downloader that can download and convert the youtube video to many other video formats. It is both a Free Mac YouTube downloader and a Mac FLV video converter.
If you want a try, here:

Hope it is helpful.

Hi,

Complete newbie here, so this may be a stupid question. My school district has a filter that will not allow Youtube. If I embed a video, that just goes to the Youtube site, right? So, I don't think that I'll be able to embed videos and use them at school. Any easy suggestions for a first time Inspire user with ActiveXpressions to put youtube videos in a flipchart?.

Ava

Hi Ava,
Most school districts do have filters to block out Youtube.
So most teachers download youtube video ( appropriate to teaching and learning) at home and then embed it.
When you embed it in a flipchart, it is present locally in the flipchart file and does not need to link to the Youtube site.
So you can show it in class after embedding it.

Saha,
Thanks for the quick reply. One final question. Usually when I download a video and use it in Powerpoint I have to have the video and the powerpoint file in the same folder. If I embed a downloaded file in a flipchart, is the video then part of the flipchart? So, I don't have to have a copy of the video somewhere else on the computer? I guess I really don't understand the difference between inserting and embeding. Is there a resource you can recommend to get this really basic info which I lack? Besides bugging you that is...

Ava

saha

Not a problem Ava.

If you embed a file in a flipchart then this file becomes part of the flipchart. You will not have to keep a copy of the embedded file anywhere. This is the beauty of embedding assets in a flipchart. It becomes part of the flipchart and when you share it with others, they see all the multimedia assets embedded with it.

The difference between inserting a link and embedding is:

Insert link- you are inserting a action link to open the file that resides somewhere in your computer. In this case the file has to exist in the specific location for it to work inside the flipchart

Embedding file- In this case the whole file is embedded and becomes part of the flipchart. You do not need to keep a copy of this file anywhere for it to work.

Couple of places for you to learn the basics:

Activtips http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.1147

Free Inspire Course http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.17567

I have attached a screen recording to show how a video flv file downloaded from youtube is embedded in a flipchart.

You are very welcome.
To prevent the video from playing automatically you need to uncheck the option "autoplay".
Simply go the object browser, select the video, then select property browser...scroll down and you should see the option to uncheck "autoplay"
