View Full Version : FlipPals anyone?

Last summer the idea was floated to connect classrooms through the exchange of flipcharts. I ended up connecting with an amazing teacher from Ohio, Laura Smith [clap], and we exchanged a couple of fun, engaging fc's created by students for students. Several goals were met: writing for an authentic audience, motivating research about community on many levels, and (of course) integrating technology in meaningful ways.
I would enjoy pairing up with classrooms from anywhere on the Planet. 4th graders (9-10 years old) in my district study the continents. This is also a great activity for us to learn about our state (Illinois) so a couple of partnerships would be ideal.
If this sounds interesting, please send me a private message. I had a lot of fun with this last year and hope to make it a regular part of our year.

Tom,
That is a great idea! I teach just down the hall from Laura and heard a little about your partnership. (And you're right, she is an amazing teacher!) [clap] I would love to do the same with any third grade teachers out there (8-9 year olds) if anyone is interested.

Having posted that original thread I am thrilled you are up for it. We have had some success with this. A school in the US is joining up with a school in the UK and sharing a flipchart or two through stories. I saw this as a sort of way of being a bit more creative other than just using email....
I also then saw it as a way of hopefully populating the children's area of Planet....
Lets get this humming with exchanges from all over the Globe or the Planet!!

Maybe it could be mentioned at NECC and Boston user group too. I'm sure there are lots of great canidates out there that might not be following all the forum activity. I had been a user for 1.5 year and hadn't even been in here until it was talked up at the Sarasota user group.

I teach 3rd grade in Baton Rouge, LA. I think this is a great idea and I'd be interested in a flipchart exchange. Would this be a flipchart about the class, the area, or what? BTW, I recognize your name from flipcharts I've downloaded and used!

Thanks Carole! I'm glad you found my flipcharts useful!( I'll PM you about your post and working together.)
Here's another idea for the forum that I was thinking of...{} I'm sure you guys have heard of the traveling teddy bears...Flat Stanley's, etc. In the past, I've done a traveling teddy bear around the world and each class would send something back to my classroom about their region. We learned a little about geography as well as that part of the world. What about a traveling flipchart? Every few weeks the flipchart would get sent to a new classroom and that classroom would add a page or two to the flipchart about their area and then send it off to another classroom? By the end there'd be a whole flipchart of different places that everyone could use in their classroom. Instead of a traveling teddy bear or class mascot, it could be the Traveling Promethean Man. :p There's no postage, no items to mail... just a flipchart that the class would devise? Any thoughts on trying something like this? If anyone wants to take part and give it a try, I can work on putting something together.

By the way, if we get a lot of people who want to partake in "The Adventures of Flippy the Flipchart" we can have a few flipcharts going around at once in different groups. It would be fun to compare them all at the end. :D One last thing, if you want to be a part of the traveling flipchart- could you include your location in your message if you don't have it in your user profile? I'm a scrapbooker and we do what's called a circle journal (like a round robin letter)
The premise is that each person chooses a question (or each class designs a title page with a question). Then, the flip charts could rotate and each class would add their answer to the question, then it gets sent on.
If it were once a week, it could be a Friday activity, for example. Or it could be creative writing and each class adds a page to the story.
There are lots of directions this could go! I would love to participate. I teach 4th grade in Southern California.
And today is my first day of summer (just had to add that in because it sounds so good!)

What great energy there is on this thread! I would like to participate in the traveling flipchart, too.
I am glad to know my class will get to be flippals with other kids in other parts of the States again. I would also enjoy collaborating with a class outside of the US if anyone is interested.
Another interesting resource for geographically infused penpals is TruckerBuddy.org . It connects classrooms with independent over the road truckers. We had a real gem last year. She sent us letters, postcards, artifacts from her travels...she even was game for Gcast'ing some of her messages so students could listen along as they read them (gcast.com). Sadly, she is retiring and we will be matched with a new trucker. I believe this program is limited to classrooms in the US and Canada, but I could be wrong about that.

I can't believe that I just found this thread.
I had 2 teachers in my area sharing flipcharts between their classes (They were in St. Louis and Minnesota). Students shared their pictures, and talked about what they were learning, the weather, etc.
It was just an experiment, but it went over huge! Now almost every teacher in the school in Minnesota wants a partner for next year. So, maybe some of you would liek to partner with a class in Minnesota? Maybe we revisit in August?

Okay based on your brilliant guy shall I get a character drawn by an artist so that we can put him into all sorts of scenarios maybe have him positioned in different poses etc?
Then I think we could begin to build a Flippy Subject base set of Flipcharts.
Maybe have Flipcharts which are based around different subjects.
The geography one is the obvious one - this is a starting list from the topic bases with Primary/Elementary from the Geography Scheme of Work.
Unit 1. Around our school - the local area (http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes2/geography/geo1/?view=get)

When the brainpower on this forum gets going, the results are tremendous! Heather, I love your idea of the traveling Promethean Man. I will have a group of 30 second graders this upcoming school year, so if that falls within the age range that you had in mind, send me a message and I will get in contact with you. I was going to suggest it to whoever could draw! :) I was thinking as I was creating him how fun it would be to put him in different clothes! haha If he's somewhere in the winter the classroom who has him can put him in all sorts of winter wear! Or if he's relaxing on a beach, he can have his sunglasses and shorts!
And Lisa, if he has his own resource pack the possibilities are endless! I'm keeping track of everyone who wants to participate, so keep the thread going! At this rate we're going to have a few flipcharts going around at once... I think Flippy is going to need his own Promethean Planet section. {}

I think Margaret is right. It's time to set up some guidelines for our little guy so we don't lose track of his purpose which is to learn about different parts of the world. I think we should start simple for now, although I know we could all think of a million directions to go in. So here's some guidelines that I came up with:
1. Flippy will be with you for a period of time to experience life in your part of the world. A schedule will be sent before Flippy departs on his travels so you will know when to expect him.
2. During his stay, you will add on to his flipchart a few pages (about 5-6) about his experience. Think of it like a scrapbook!
3. These pages may include:
a.) Tell us about your school/class.
b.) Tell about your town or local area
- What's the weather like?
- What is the landscape? (mountainous, flat, an island? etc)
- What are some things to do/see in your area? (Does Flippy visit certain places?)
- There will be a world map already on his flipchart, so you will need to mark your spot on the map.
4. How you present this information is up to you and your class. You may include pictures, maps, videos, Be Creative!
5.) At the end of Flippy's adventures, we'll have a flipchart of wondrous places to learn about!
Does this sound manageable to everyone? I think we all have standards that will cover these topics.

I had an idea that might be an easy way to manage this...
When school starts, each class makes a flip chart that introduces themselves and asks a few questions-- things the students would like to know about classes from around the country/world.
There could be a thread here where each teacher post their class flip chart.
Then, whenever the class has time, or as the teacher schedules, they pick up a flip chart from the thread, show the class, and create a response flip chart, which gets sent to the original teacher.
That way, everyone can participate as they are able to, not based on a schedule or rotation. Some classes may meet everyone, some classes may only get to 4 or 5.
Does that make sense? I hate to see this become a scheduling and management nightmare, I was thinking this might make it more flexible for lots of people to participate in and not be left out.

Some good suggestions here Liz - I was wondering how the 'travelling flipchart' thing would work. This is more like a 'Day in the Life of..' concept and probably a lot easier for people to fit in with.
The response flipchart could also be shared with the FlipFans community? Any classes that establish a particularly strong bond can continue that off-thread.
In a small way I did something like that just after Hurricane Katrina September 2005. A group of international students at my school in New Zealand made a greetings flipchart for Air Skeeter's class in Louisiana, and they sent us back a great flipchart showing something of their school

I'd love to get involved - what a fantastic idea! We've still got 4 and a bit weeks to go before the Summer so I'll talk with the children about their ideas.
Next year I'm mainly working with a Y5 (4th grade) class and a bit with a Y6 (5th grade) class, but i can think of teachers in years 3 and 4 who would also be interested in this project - a great way of helping our teachers to move over from Notebook to ActivPrimary offboard!

Okay Liam and I are on the case we will ensure that there is a Flippy Place somewhere on Planet at some point...
In the meantime we need to try and organise this so that it works....
We want as many people to take part as possible and so access needs to be easy.
The easiest way to do this is to split it into bite size chunks.
If we get a spreadsheet going with certain details it will be easy to pair people up. I suggest that any more than two classes sharing a flipchart will become too complex. Look at the TICK TICK TICK Flipchart. Containing a Promethean Flipchat*:confused::confused::confused: NEVER.... but lets ensure that this can get started.
Using the resume that Heather came up was excellent, but we probably need to allow others to identify some areas that they would like to share with others across the globe.
Getting flipcharts shared within the same age range of students will also allow for a better outcome.
To have all of these flipcharts as downloads which can then be adapted and edited and modified will make them a really exceptional set of teaching resources....
What do you think?
PS *I was going to edit my spelling error "Flipchat" but thought that was rather neat :) :) :)
I think if schools started off with the sort of information that Heather suggested or similar, then once the initial pages had been shared betweent he two schools, they would then be in a position to ask for futher exchange based on what they had learned from the original flipchat(!)?
An initial pairing would make the logistics easier as if many teacher volunteered their classes througha thread it might mean that classes could get overlooked and other classes be asked for multiple pairings.
However, perhaps a thread (or area) where teachers could share their class' flp including the agreed on information prior to pairing up would be a great resource for all to use when comparing schools/locations? - some classes may be interested in using the information this would generate, without necessarily pairing up...

OK, so I guess you have all confused me with all your different ideas. It’s sounding like some of you are mixing Flip Pals with the Traveling Flipchart (aka “The ACTIV Adventures of Flippy the Flipchart”). So let me try my hand at some kind of solution from what I’m hearing from the last few posts.
• We want as many people as possible to partake in Flippy’s Adventure.
• Adding on to one flipchart might make it hard to manage and people don’t want a schedule to follow.
• Each teacher/class can incorporate various standards into his/her flipchart that meet the needs of their students.
So how about something like this:
If Margaret and Liam can get a page on Planet for Flippy’s Adventures that we can upload flipcharts to that would be great! Could we have a Map on the main page of his section to plot where he has been? (Just an idea)
Once we have a nice graphic of Flippy and Lisa so graciously creates a Resource Pack for him everyone can download him and his resources and create a flipchart about their area. We can use the questions I came up with as a guideline if we so choose or add others. We can make the flipchart as long or as short as we want as long as Flippy is incorporated into the flipchart. Once we have finished the flipchart, we can upload it to Flippy’s section of Planet and then everyone can view the flipcharts with their class. If we want to pair up with other classes as Lara suggested, we could always post contact information within the flipchart or include a page of questions to invite others to contact us with the answers.
Does this sound more manageable to everyone? If we start basic this year, we can always add to the experience in years to come.
Just my 2 cents...
Margaret Allen

Hey Heather,
The only trouble with that is that it waits on the Flippy Page and everybody is a bit busy at the moment....So why don't a few people just pair up and start once the character is available. In the meantime, getting photos of your area, your school, your shops, your hospital, your etc etc etc would be a good way of starting. Students depending on age could make comments, write a few sentences, and generally share - This flipchart is then sent between the two schools and comparisons made - does that take it on a level?+wave+
Just my twopennyworth ;):D+wave+

Hi,
I thought flippy the traveling flipchart and flipchart pals were two different ideas. I actually have been fortunate to hook up with another first grade teacher by reading the thread and then contacting her. I like the idea of having a place on the planet for flippy the traveler for all to share and then pairing up for flipchart pals. But, that is just my thought. I am so impressed that so many are always willing to share and start new ideas. This is fantastic!:)

Cheryl- I am amazed as well with the energy on this thread! There's so many great ideas! You are right, the Flip Pals and the Traveling Flipchart ARE two separate ideas and many people are already pairing up with another class to swap flipcharts throughout the school year (Flip Pals).
I have also been keeping a spreadsheet of everyone interested in hosting Flippy for the traveling flipchart so thanks for your info! :) Since most of us are all on summer break and won't be starting back until August, there's no need to get specific details on Flippy's travels done now. Although, I'm now thinking that I should have started a new thread just for Flippy so we don't have the confusion with Tom's FlipPals. :o

Well people, my artist has come up with the goods!!! [clap]
I have asked him to colour the case orange (!) and have also asked him to make all the assets (hats and instruments) separate so that people can dress their own Flippy with whichever topic/hat type that they want.
So we will end up with all of these as separate options with different assets to "dress" him...

How about a Google Earth feature to pinpoint Flippy's adventures, my kids loved using Google Earth last year. OH, and Google Earth on the ActivBoard is so much fun. How about photographs of where we live. If we start planning now we can collect photos of interesting places or happenings going on where we live.
For us (the teachers) how about meeting collaborative objectives...

The Google Earth idea is great for this.
BTW – aren’t we overlooking something here?
The traveller could be Flippy OR Flippa… I am sure the artist could come up with some alternatives to include this possibility [clap]

If we get a spreadsheet going with certain details it will be easy to pair people up. ...
,,,,
PS *I was going to edit my spelling error "Flipchat" but thought that was rather neat :) :) :)
Would this be a "Pair up" kind of thing, or a "get to know lots of different areas" kind of thing? I prefer the later, personally.
And, I like the flipchat typo, it works! [clap]

Margaret,
Just a couple of thoughts on Flippy.
Could he be a "color" so that I can make his surroundings transparent when a do the resource pack?
Do you think we also need a Flippette? Women's Rights!
Could we have Flippy holding a blank sign? And with thought and speech bubble?

liz- Yes, the traveling flipchart will be a "know lots of different areas" kind of thing, whereas the FlipPals is a "Pair Up" kind of thing. If you're familiar with the Traveling Teddy Bear idea, it's going to be very similar. I'm working on a few things to make this an easy experience for all.
Margaret- I love Flippy! Kudos to your artist and to you for getting on this so fast! :) If I could make a cardboard cutout of him and put him on a plane, I'd bring him to Boston to share our project with others. haha
Lisa- I love the thought & speech bubbles idea. :D I think those would be used a lot!
Well done to all!

I guess it's a good thing I am going on vacation Saturday, because I think the office staff/custodian are tired of seeing me come into the building to look for progress!:o
I would love to be involved this year...we study Old World history in my class. I do a "European Excursion" in the spring, complete with passport. (I have been asked for the umpteenth time to do a postcard exchange, but this is so much more exciting), but I hope you will keep in mind I am very new at all this!!

Heather,
You are absolutely "out of this world"... This is the cutest idea I've seen using the old idea of pen-pals (old school, like the CHALKBOARD, a thing of the past). Now with the help of you and Margaret we have FlipPals. Am so excited and you can count on me to be a part of this exciting adventure. I knew it was great having you in my class.
THE ONLY THING I WOULD LIKE TO SEE NOW IS: FlipPal characters produced and given out at state and national conventions (tossed out to the crowds like the activexpressions were at NECC). Every teacher will want a set for her classroom.
Maybe have an autograph FlipPal to exchange with a partner teacher you are working with or maybe have the FlipPal holding a book for the teacher to add pictures of her class and then send to other classes across the country. WHAT A TREASURE !!!! and the ideas continue....what do you think???

I have gone through this thread and believe I have everyone who wanted to host the traveling flipchart up to this point. I sent a PM (private message) needing a bit more info to all of you who are interested. If by some chance I missed someone or the PM didn't go through, please send me a private message with the following info:
your name,
email address,
location,
grade (or ages of students),
When does/did your school year start and when will it finish?
This information will help me organize everyone into different groups since we have quite a few particpants (around 21 so far!). When I have all of the information back from everyone, I will send out emails to fill you in on all the details. I know you're all anxious to get started or if you're on summer break like me- looking ahead to planning your adventure with Flippy/Flippette. :D

Heather,
This sounds like a wonderful project in which I would love my students to participate. Please add me to the list to participate in the travelling flip chart if you are willing to include 7-8th grade students. I noticed that most, if not all the participants teach in the lower elementary grades. I may be teaching some 5th grade students this year, and if so I could include them. I look forward to visiting with Flippy this coming school year. Thanks for coming up with such an innovative idea and extending it out into the Promethean community! When we return to school, on the 5th, I'll be sharing this with my colleagues and students. In the meantime, is it too late to sign on, Heather? I know that my students would love to do something like this when they finish their state tests. I will send you a private message.:D+wave+

Hey, it looks like the Planet team has taken the FlipPals ideas you all started and created a brand new section/service for this! It is called Activconnect and it a way of connecting your classroom and your pupils to other students around the world including live video and sharing of flipcharts via the internet. There is even a new forum area just for this! Here's a link to the new section (housed under the Members "tab)!
Activconnect
http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.16582
More ideas below.
Love to hear what you all think!
Lisa
Make FlipPals Join up with other classrooms from different parts of the country and/or world to become 'sister' classrooms and communicate via flipcharts and e-mail to find out more about each other. The culminating activity could be a pre-scheduled time to meet their new friends face-to-face through Activconnect.
http://www.prometheanplanet.com/forum/../upload/img_100/homebound.jpg Reach Homebound students
If you have a student in a class with a health issue preventing him/her to come to class, he or she could come to class via Activconnect and be able to fully participate in lessons.
http://www.prometheanplanet.com/forum/../upload/img_100/extend_teacher.jpg Extend a teacher
There are times when there are not enough students to complete a special class like Latin 3 or Japanese (or a teacher available to teach it at that location.) These classes could be taught via Activconnect a few days a week allowing the students to take these classes. This could be especially helpful for rural school districts who may offer fewer class options.
http://www.prometheanplanet.com/forum/../upload/img_100/expert.jpg Meet with Experts
Your class could invite a remote "expert" on a subject to visit with them for an hour. This could be a scientist in another geographic area or an artist. This could also be a way for students to learn about various careers.
http://www.prometheanplanet.com/forum/../upload/img_100/virtual_connection.jpg Make a Virtual Users Group
You could arrange for virtual Promethean users group for a specific curriculum area or topic. Post your idea on the forum and find teachers who are ready to learn and share.

Tom,
That is a great idea! I teach just down the hall from Laura and heard a little about your partnership. (And you're right, she is an amazing teacher!) [clap] I would love to do the same with any third grade teachers out there (8-9 year olds) if anyone is interested.
I am interested. I also teach 3rd grade in South Florida. If you are interested, let me know.

During a recent Activconnect project with a UK school Foster's Primary and a US school Rock Island, the children have used the Flip Pals characters to share their experiences with each other. Once the project is completed we will have the flipcharts uploaded onto Planet, but thought you might like a sneaky peek at a couple of the flipcharts to help you get started! The children are enjoying all aspects of this sharing experience.

A traveling flipcart sounds great! I would love to participate next year, when I receive my Promethean Board. (If everything goes as planned.)
I would also like to find a pen pal for next year. Maybe a Promethean pen pal. The ideas are swirling in my mind. ;o)

Hello ccuttler +wave+
We don't actually have a 'list' as such, unfortunately. What I would suggest is that you have a look through these threads and see if there's another school who've advertised for a similar link up. Once you've found one, simply send the member a PVT message and take it from there.
You could also check out the ActivRoom (http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.16582) (was called ActivConnect) section on Planet for some further ideas, plus, information on the Elluminate technology you can download for FREE to try out your eventual link.

What a wonderful idea! My kids would love it. I taught first grade last year; however, I am looping up to second with the same kids. I can not wait! I am really looking for new and innovative ideas to bring to our classroom- I want the kids to truly FEEL that we are in a different classroom/ grade...although luckily, we are not changing rooms!
If anyone is interested I would love to be "FlipPals"!

????Hi Everyone! ????
I've just recently found Promethean just when I am applying for a grant.
I'm going to apply to visit overseas classrooms (I'm in Australia) to observe lessons using interactive whiteboards.
My preference would first be to visit ESL with Adults or secondly to visit ESL classrooms
My grant allowance would probably be enough for my fares and about 1 week accommodation.
I'll probably try to do the visit in early April 2010 if successful with my application.
If you, your school, or you and local friends would be willing to host an observer, please get in touch with me.
Glenda Inverarity.
Adelaide, Australia.

Hi Glenda
Welcome to Promethean! How exciting for you, which country are you planning on visiting, so that we can help you out?
Hi Glenda,
this sounds like a fantastic opportunity. I don't know if you are planning to visit England but if you are, we are in the North of England. Recently, 4 of our local schools were observed using the interactive whiteboards by 18 european visitors. Their aim was to watch its impact on the children's progress within lesson time. The children ranged from 7 -14. If you would like to visit our schools, just get in touch and I will see if we can help you. Please remember that this is England and could well be raining cats and dogs in April!!!! :-/
Kind regards
Debs

Dear Debs and Zelda,
Thanks for your replies. I have not decided on any particular country at this stage, as I have just initially cast out looking for interest. My grant application has to be submitted by early August which isn't very far away, so I'm happy to consult with anyone really. However, I do want to observe ESL, and preferrably with Adults or teenagers at least.
Unfortunately, I'm also a bit new to forums, so am a bit unsure of the best way to begin negotiations.
My background is working with adult migrants and refugees. My school has just bought their first interactive whiteboards and I am keen to not only play with them, but also to observe good practice so that I can share my learning with colleagues here in South Australia. As I said above, I need to put together my application by early August, so am happy to talk about possibilities anywhere - but would like it to be overseas.

This flipchart was inspired by a 'field trip' I took to New York City!
Created in ActivInspire, it offers a story-movie using the flipchart recorder and several practice and assessment pages. I wonder if you would like to create a travel flipchart with your students to places of interest in your area and post here?
Teach others about the geography of your area or other things that Inspire!

This project was for the 08-09 school year. I've had to move classrooms this school year and am still trying to get my classroom completely put together (plus I don't even have my new Activboard yet!) so I have not started a new traveling flipchart project, but feel free to begin one among yourselves. :D It sounds like there are some people interested.

I would LOVE to start a FlipPal communication! I'm in central Texas and would like to know if other teachers from Texas would like to join in. I teach 4th grade and our Social Studies focus is Texas (as other TX teachers know!). It would be so awesome to connect with students from other regions to learn about our wonderful state. I'd also like to use this idea to enhance the students writing with sharing stories.

My name is Lauren Turner and I work for a non-profit organization, Digital Opportunity Trust USA. Our program is called the TeachUp! Program. We recruit and train young tech savvy professionals and place them into public schools to assist teachers with the integration of technology into the cirriculum. We are currently located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Recovery School District in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, and the Mississippi Delta. Our organization has implemented Vroom in a couple of schools on the Gulf Coast and would like to build contacts throughout the United States or possibly even the world. If you would be interested in being one of our contacts for use in collaborative classrooms Please send me an email and we can begin to create a long distant interactive learning environment.

Hey everyone! I am a library/media specialist and a 5th grade Science teacher on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (Lauren, my intern is Candace) +wave+ Candace is my TeachUp intern for our school and we are really trying to get a traveling flipchart contact list so that we can begin this next school year. We would love to have teachers from the USA and around the world. If you are interested, please send me an email or a reply here and we can collaborate on a lesson or lessons over the summer to begin the new school year in August. If you do not have the same school year schedule as ours, that's okay! We will find a way to make our "long distance connection" work for all the students involved. We are SO excited to make this work, so if anyone out there is interested, please let me know. Through our library, I teach K-5th grade students, so this post is for a teacher of any grade, any subject, K-5th grade. Hope to hear from you all soon!
