View Full Version : make shift telephone response

I'm making an assessment where my students need to listen to a telephone recording with some prompts. ("Please enter the label number, then push #) I want them to come to the board and push the numbers on a telephone image. Is there a way to keep track of what they pushed so I can check after they have finished to see if they did it correctly? I've racked my brain around having layers with actions, but I can't seem to figure it all out. Peter's class on Sunday is making my head spin with so many options, but I just can't seem to configure it! I know this would be perfect using ActivExpressions, but I don't have them yet! Grrrr... Any ideas out there??? ????

You could give the numbers on the phone the action of going to a different pages. Have a phone on that target page with new sets of actions to different pages. If the right sequence is followed they will arive at the proper page. Depending on the length of the sequence, you could end up with a lot of pages. Duplicate the page as many time as you figure you will need to before you start assigning actions.
I am afraid that the alternative to making this happen without ActivExpression or a numerical answer entry on a student response device is a Macromedia Flash form with cgi scripting hosted on a webserver.

Yes Alisa,
This type of activity is too complex for Activstudio's actions and properties especially if you need to record a sequence of button pushes. As Gautam suggests it could be done, but is the end result worth the programming effort?
I'm sure Expressions would be able to offer some of this functionality but the only way you could record the sequences is IF they actually arrived at the correct response!

I've created a simple option where if you press the key the number appears. But the user has to drag the number away from the key and put it in a box. The page notes explain how I've made it. Hope it helps.

Does this do something along the lines you are looking for?
I modified David Lloyds flipchart using the Append function in Activstudio to add a letter to another text object.
If you need to enter abc you could add some smaller alpha keys and append the alphabet letters - this wouldnt exactly mimic the toggle action of a mobile phone but it would work in a fashion.

Thank you for your ideas, suggestions, and creativeness! I am overwhelmed by the responses so quickly.

I literally just logged on to suggest appending text action, and it is already done! WOW! These look amazing [clap]!

Alan...that is neat!
Now only if we could figure out a way to store the output in a flat file:) and have a way to make a login screen to identify the user...all with ActivStudio:)

No easy answer to that Saha!
The only 'lazy workaround' is to write the users name on the page and screen shot it - or create a flipchart with the page duplicated for each learner and save the whole thing.

Actually, I just figured out that you can drag and drop the text string to an office document so you could have a word template set up and then drag the string from the flipchart into the word doc
Then reset the flipchart page and do it for the next learner.

Alan, I love that page. Appending text is one of my favorite actions even in a math class!:p After talking this past weekend to some Primary teachers, I found that they take a page, duplicate the page, and have each of the students name on the page for them click on from the title page. Then this can work in a center too.:-/

Append text is awesome. What a neat skill to share.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks again for sharing your ideas!
I'm getting an error message when I tried opening the two flipcharts from David and Alan. It says that I can only open one derivitive at a time and then drops me. So I haven't been able to look at your work. Then, as I was reading along, you completely lost me with the last few entries...completely speaking another language to me! (maybe you've bypassed my question altogether and are having your own conversation now!):D Have a great week everyone!

Alisha.Takeuchi,
When you finally open the flipcharts (which you may need to save before trying to open them as opposed to opening them directly from the webpage... this has been a problem on our school network as well), you will see that both Alan and David (and Heather) added actions to your pages which allow them to do almost exactly what you asked them to do!
The action they associated to the buttons that allows them to record the buttons that students depress is called "Append Text" and it allows you to click a button or a picture, and a text box will "appear" and be edited with whatever you tell it to do. It is perfect for rebus reading, but it is also the perfect action for this activity as well..
Sorry, sometimes people do tend to speak the Promethean Language and go off on tangents, but believe it or not, this was all about your original question!
On a side not, which version of the software are you currently running?

This might help... I apologise for my friends going off into their own little world...:eek:{}[clap]+wave+:D they are just naturally enthusiastic and so got waylaid on some of the more extreme opportunities +wave+[clap] that the software offers!!
We wouldn't want you to feel excluded... Please ask if there is anything else we can do to help!!!+wave++wave++wave++wave+

Just a third grade teacher with this awesome piece of technology in his room that has completely turned him into a dork!
~Ben
PS: He thinks he was a HUGE dork before the ActivBoard, but at least now he is willing to admit it in public!
PPS: He also finds it weird when people refer to themselves in the third person, don't you?

Margaret, he is a real hoot. And quite fun at the Usergroup. If you are a dork because of the technology, then I guess we all are. ;)

And, apparently, and this is a recent thing for him, he blushes uncontrollably when ready the latest planet posts... Who knew?
Glad to hear he was such a hoot! I will have to pass that information on to him the next time I see him!
