View Full Version : Lung sound file quits early

I have a problem with some sound files that are Quicktime .mov files to begin with. Opened on my Mac the files play correctly in the Quicktime player.

However, when I bring the file in to AS using Insert/Video path, the file comes in but when activated it of course opens the AS sound player and only plays one snippet of sound and then quits, even though the bar continues to move along.

I am pretty sure I am doing something simple wrong, maybe with how I am inserting the file.

I am attaching a sample file in case someone could also test and find what I am doing wrong.

Hmm, The download plays fine for me.

I played it first in quicktime (outside of AS).

Then I right clicked on page and selected: Insert> video File link.

I navigated to the file (on my desktop) and selected it.

then it asked me how to make the link.

Text
Image icon
Action object
The first two worked for me. the Action object didn't show anything to click on on my page.

I did not "store in flipchart."

I could hear the sound (and a little icon appeared at the top of the page if I wanted to "stop it")

here are my preferences for "linked file settings." Issue could be there. See attachment.

Hope this helps.

Thank you much for helping. I made sure my preferences are as your's are. I repeated your process and on the AS page my sound is cutting out after "half a lung sound".

Why do you have the sound controller unchecked? I usually like to see it so I can stop when I want, repeat, etc. This isn't part of my problem, I know.

It will probably be the same, but I am attaching a different file that I used while following your steps without success. On this recording, played through Quicktime, you will hear 4-5 complete lung cycles from a patient. Placed into AS I get only inspiration (half a breath). If the sound controller is visible, you see the progress bar continuing to move steadily but without any sound.

I would like to think there is something funny about these .mov files, but when I am trying to insert a .wav or .aiff sound file the same thing is happening - cutting out after about 1 second.

I am successfully inserting some .swf files and these are playing fine.

Lisa - I should have said that I am running version 3.0 for Mac of AS and all of my Mac stuff is current, including the recent Quicktime update. We know that this Quicktime update lost the ability to play .swf files in our Keynote presentations so it could be that something with this update is messing around inside AS?

It could well be the QuickTime Player. I tried the files and had no problem but I'm using QuickTime 7.2.

It's strange that you problem also exists with .wav and .aiff files.

All I can suggest is that if the file plays okay outside of AS then to uncheck the box next to Sound under the Linked File Hosting preferences.

The link will then open Quicktime and play the file from there rather than from within AS.

There is clearly something wrong with how the AS sound player is now dealing with these things in my setup (latest version of Tiger - waiting for AS upgrade before doing Leopard) and latest Quicktime.

With the "Sound" option unchecked in Linked file hosting, all of the .mov, .wav, and .au files open the Quicktime player and play the whole sound without cutting out. AIFF files of course open up iTunes to play, which isn't ideal.

For several reasons, it is nicer during the presentations to use the AS sound player rather than the Quicktime player for these things (hides the title of the sound, can have several sound players open and go back and forth, can loop more quickly). However, at least I have a partial solution. Maybe the 3.6 AS version that is coming will have a little fix in it.

I should reiterate that I don't have any troubles playing full Quicktime movies with sound or playing SWF files with motion and sound. It just seems to be sound files themselves.

Thanks for your help. I at least have a solution that will work reasonably well. Do you think I should call tech support with a report about this or forget it?

I would submit the bug to them. I think there is an online form if you don't have time to call. At least then they will have record of your issue and can pass it along to the development team to check out.

Just my two cents.

I will submit it. There isn't really a problem with AIFF, AU files - I just had to Get Info on the files and tell them to open with Quicktime and everything ran fine with QT.

The final issue that I will submit seems to be that the native sound controller in AS is now not working reliably with various sound file types.

You say you had to set the AIFF files to open with QuickTime. Maybe this is your issue - the QuickTime Player preferences may not be set correctly.

You can set them in the Preferences Panel.

See attachments (in order).

Let me know if this works.

I am also getting .wav files that play all the way through in Quicktime, but stop playing partway through when they are in AS. I have tried control-clicking and inserting them as a sound and I have attached them as an action to an object. In both cases the .wav file plays all the way through only when opened in Quicktime, never when opened in AS.

I went online and found a whole different .wav file for the same sound...hoping a new file would somehow work better...but got the exact same thing.

I have unchecked the sound box in Linked File Hosting so that sound files now open in Quicktime, but I would much rather have them play in AS.

I am working on Mac version 10.5.2.

I'm just wondering if anyone figured out a solution to this problem? I'd like the sound files to play in AS - especially when i am showing AS technology to others.
