View Full Version : Container
I would like it that when a student chooses the wrong answer on a flipchart, it goes back to its original position. I am using version 3. Please help.

Hi, I've been trying to do the same thing with similiar results. I can have a sound play when it is in the right place but i haven't figured out how to make a wrong answer snap back. Help.

Here's a flipchart I put together to help some of the teachers I work with create their own Containers...I hope it helps to resolve some of your container "issues."

Leslie..!
That was a well made flipchart to demostrate the container feature
Cheers![clap]

Objects that are designed to be dragged into specific containers should have the "return if not contained" property ticked. This of course will not operate in Design mode - so that you may position the objects correctly. Once out of Design mode, whenever the objects are moved and are not contained inside a container object, they will snap back to their starting position. [clap]

I feel sooo dumb. The reason my containers wouldn't work was that I was still in design mode. Thanks for the help.[clap]

I have followed all of the directions and I can't get my objects to snap back. I have tried out of design mode too. They will play sound when they are placed correctly, but they won't snap back and return if not contained is checked. HELP!
Thanks,
Kelly

 I wonder if you are trying to make a group "return if not contained".
It could be that the software doesn't know which of the objects in the group to return.
Try this - take a snapshot (to the current page) of your group so that it becomes a single image object. Now apply the return if not contained property to it. Make sure you are not in design mode and try to move it - anywhere.
Hope this sorts it out

Here is a simple flp to illustrate.
The black rectangle has a "return if not contained" property applied to it. Drag it anywhere to prove that!
Drag the yellow text on to the rectangle and "group" the two of them.
The return if not contained stops working!

I am having trouble with the containers too. I can't get the "cards" I made to center in the containter when I drag them in. I have checked the settings and read the posts. I have also made sure I am in presentation, not design mode. I still can't get it. Any ideas?

Hi tcampbell, welcome to the forum!
(I deleted my original message, it's a bit misleading in the light of Dan's solution)

You could put a grid on the page, adjust it and then use the snap to grid feature to get onjects to align to the grid. The grid can then be masked when it's all set up. See page2 of the attached flipchart.

Hi
There is another setting which gives you abit of leeway when using the match centres setting for containers. This is so that you don't always have to get the object bang on the centre for it to contain which could be really annoying!!
However, in your case you could change it to be less tolerant so the cards will only be contained when they are closer to the centre
The setting can be found in studio settings\flipchart objects - container centre tolerance. The lower the number the closer to the centre the object must be to be contained.
However, once the object is contained it won't shift to be dead on the centre point, it will stay where it has been dropped.
One way you might want to try is using the snap to grid option & have the snap points in the centre of the boxes - I don't know whether that is a viable option for you or not.

must remember to read the 2nd page of replies in future before posting my reply - I now see that the snap to grid option has already been suggested!!

Feeling slightly hard of thinking today...
can someone just clarify that if I want multiple objects to be contained, within a single container, I have to use the keywords option.
Thanks

Yes that would be the best way. Just add the same keyword to the identification properties of each object to be contained as well as on the container.

a simpler way is to set the container to contain any object
this will only not be of any use if there any objects that you don't want to be contained.

I really don't care exactly how I get the cards into the middle of the box. I just need them to line up so that the letter cards (currently have dashes on them) will line up so that they will read as a word. I am using the chart to build some word making lessons. I am trying to make it look like a pocket chart. I looked at another flipchart and it placed the text in the middle of the container. I just can't figure out what I am doing that was different than what was on the other chart (ExampleforSSP). Maybe I don't understand the concept of the container. I think that it is setup so that I can set it to contain another object when the object is moved over it's space. I want the letter card to be able to be moved to it's spot on the pocket chart and stay as close to the middle of or within the boundaries of the container. I have included the flipchart that I have been looking at as an example. The numerals seem to snap right into the middle of the container when you drag them into it. I just don't get why the one chart is working and mine isn't.????

Hi Tony,
The page you attached uses Dan's technique.
But the container element isn't really essential. To make the items line up with the grid, add a grid to the page, then use the Snap to Grid and the Grid Mask tool.
More details:
Add a grid to the page FIRST.
Apply the Snap to Grid setting (double-click on the Grid; click the Snap to Grid icon in the Page Edit toolbox).
Design the page with the help of the grid, so you can see how the final images will line up with the grid.
when the page is finished, re-open the Page Edit toolbox and click the Grid Mask icon. This hides the grid but keeps the Snap to Grid function working.
Now the page should work as you want.Hope that makes sense. It can be quite fiddly, but is a useful technique to do what you want.
Hope that helps...!
