I am VERY new to this! I read the directions for editing hangman words for the activity in the resource list in version 3 of activstudio and thought I edited the list. I saved a list over the one given but it defaults back to the list...cat, dog, horse, etc. When it says to open the hangman.txt in word, I can't do that. Any hints would be most helpful.

I haven't used this option yet, but doing a search I found this and it might answer your question. http://www.prometheanplanet.com/common/html/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=2398&highlight=hangman

I haven't tried the Hangman game yet but you make me want to try it now!

I did a search for you on the forum and found this thread. Maybe something in it will help you with your question.

I'll try it. Thanks! I did try a search before posting a question about hangman and didn't get any results. I have a lot to learn!

The Alien game uses a different text file called words.txt and has a different format than the Hangman.txt

Attached is the flipchart with the words file embeded.

Dan,
I'm feeling pretty thick-headed. I have downloaded both files - they are sitting on my desktop. When I open the FC and try to play, all of the letters I select bring another part of the alien until the game is over and box appears saying that the word was...there is a blank space there. I have opened the text file and found the words there. What do I have to do to make the swf file find the txt file?

Also, I am not sure how to embed two files to the same object in 2.5. I made a flipchart along the lines of those found at Crick Primary where there is a link to a swf that sits on top of the FC page. The link opens the game but they also don't find the revised txt files.

What should I do differently? Thanks in advance...

Tom, you should try enbeding both the files (swf and txt) on the same flipchart page then they can find each other.

If you need to edit the text in the text file then this can be done either externally in say notepad or from within the flipchart if you untick text in linked file hosting.

If the swf is embedded via the placeholder setting then it opens as an embeded file in the flipchart otherwise it's in a floating window.

If you're having trouble getting it to work then attach both files and I'll take a look. Also check you have the latest flash player installed.

Thanks for your input, Dan. I embedded both files using the placeholder setting, which does put them right on the FC, as you described. The game still does not find the txt file, however. I am posting all of the files. Can you figure out what I'm doing wrong?

I truly appreciate your help. I am eager to use this activity with my students. We will be moving on from Africa before too long and I know they would enjoy this.

OK - this is now working on my PC - see attached.

I don't think you had actually embeded the text file as it was still looking for a location on your desktop and the flash file was an image, again looking for a location on your desktop.

Rather than the open file action you need the open embeded file action for the text file and for the flash file you need to right click on the flipchart page and select the Flash Placeholder option (V3) or Insert Link File, with placeholder and embed actions checked (V2).

Dan,

Thanks for takikng your time to help me with this. I downloaded your new FC and the same thing is happening. I open the file and see the blanks in the game showing the letters to be guessed. When I click on the game, however, the "loading" message apears and the blanks disappear. After choosing enough letters to end the game, the "Oops! The word was..." message show with no word indicated. The text file is still not found, correct?

What else could account for this? I think you mentioned having the most current version of Flash. I believe mine is 9.0.20.0 (of the flash folders I find this is the only one that references a version).

This is becoming a bit of a saga, it seems...

Not too sure what's happening here.

The latest Flash player is Version: 9,0,45,0 available from:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Perhaps someone else could download the Hangman test pages on the attached flipchart and see how they work on their machines. I've tried it on a couple and it seems to work OK

Dan,

I tried your revised flp on my Windows laptop at home running v3 and it worked with no trouble! I was even able to edit the word list as you described. I don't know what the hitch is making it work on my Mac. I have had trouble with other embedded Flash FCs - they would crash AS. Maybe I have some kid of conflict on my computer.

Again, thanks for your help. I should add my vote for the Forums as the best Promethean resource. My students will enjoy this fun way to celebrate research they have been doing recently.

Good morning!
I just can't seem to figure this out. It is probably very simple, but evidently not for me! I  have changed and saved the word list but the word changes do not stay in the game.
Could someone please help?
Thanks a million!

Try this - the text file needs to be called words.txt

Hi Cindy - I was having the same problems. This is how I fixed it.

In the flipchart, click on the link under the letters, words.txt (make sure actions are "on". This opens the original text file.

Now either type in your words OR click on the file with YOUR words and cut and paste your words into the original text file.

Now SAVE the "words.txt" file.

Also, SAVE the flipchart before you do anything else (Save it under another name, if you wish.)

I was forgetting those two "SAVES" ! :o Cost me a lot of hair.

THANK YOU Dan! The hangman game works perfectly! I appreciate your help sooo very much!
And thank you too Carol but I still need some tutoring. I am really slow this a.m.
Evidently I am not saving these things correctly. I understand how to change the words but please please tell me step by step how to save the words AND the flipchart. How and where do I save them? I am so sorry to be so dense this a.m.! Surely give me a new appreciation for my students when something is hard for them!
Thank you so very much for any help you can give!
 Cindy

Hi Cindy - You're using AS 3.0? If so, here are my step-by-steps. (Someone else may do it differently, but this works very well for me, beginning with the Alien Hangman flipchart you posted.)

(1) Open the flipchart.
(2) Make sure actions are enabled (curly gray arrow should NOT have a red line through it).
(3) Click on the words.txt file towards the bottom of the page. This opens up the text editing window.
(4) Change each of the words present to a word from your list. Leave everything else in that window exactly as it was.
(5) Click on "File" at the top of the window. In the drop-down menu, click on "Save" and then click on "Exit" (Don't exit the file before saving.). Do NOT rename the text file as anything else. It must retain its original name.
(6) Click on the "Show Flipchart" button in the main toolbox.
(7) Click on the "Main Menu" button, then "Flipchart" and then "Save To". You can "Save To" anywhere you wish, including "My Flipcharts".
(8) NOW play with the flipchart!

Your words are now embedded in the flipchart itself. If you want to have several different sets of words, just follow the above, and save the flipchart under different names. But don't change the name of the words.txt file! I've attached a flipchart I made from the one you posted, with a new set of words.

It was confusing to me also, so I feel your pain....! :)

Hi Dan - Is there a limit on the number of words which the Alien Hangman file can contain? I added ten more elements, which gives a total of twenty, and it still works. Would it work with, say, 110 words (elements)? Thanks!

Yes - I don't see why not as long as the text is formatted correctly throughout.
