Many of the students at my high school either don't have Internet access at home, or they can't afford to pay the latest bill from their ISP, or their modem stopped working a month ago. Or they have a cheap dial-up Internet access with very limited bandwidth (any may have to pay a hefty excess if they exceed their limit).
Outside the capital cities, Internet access in Australia is often limited to a dial-up connection, and often one that effectively operates at less than 56kbps.
A primary teacher in Rockhampton who is a technology/ICT guru is teaching a primary class in which only 5 students have access to the Internet from home.
So I was rather dismayed when I went to download the AS3 viewer and found out that I couldn't distribute it via CD to the students at my high school. For many of them, this effectively means that they will not be able to access the Viewer and hence can't view flipcharts at home.
I assume the same restrictions will apply to SE3 when it is released, with the same outcome.
Can Promethean please review this policy? Given that the viewer is available to the general public, I don't see a strong case for not allowing it to be shared via CD. Or at least allowing schools that have purchased one or more ACTIVBoards to distribute the Viewer software via a CD.
Ditto for the upcoming SE3. Please consider allowing schools who have purchased an ACTIVBoard to share the Student Edition software with their students via CD. I would love to set an assignment where the students work in groups in an on-line environment (such as a wiki) to produce an SE flipchart on a given topic. But with the current policy, not all students will be able to get a copy of SE, and hence such an assignment will not be possible.
Cheers
Rex
