View Full Version : Downloading ActivViewer and (presumably) SE3

Many of the students at my high school either don't have Internet access at home, or they can't afford to pay the latest bill from their ISP, or their modem stopped working a month ago. Or they have a cheap dial-up Internet access with very limited bandwidth (any may have to pay a hefty excess if they exceed their limit).

Outside the capital cities, Internet access in Australia is often limited to a dial-up connection, and often one that effectively operates at less than 56kbps.

A primary teacher in Rockhampton who is a technology/ICT guru is teaching a primary class in which only 5 students have access to the Internet from home.

So I was rather dismayed when I went to download the AS3 viewer and found out that I couldn't distribute it via CD to the students at my high school. For many of them, this effectively means that they will not be able to access the Viewer and hence can't view flipcharts at home.

I assume the same restrictions will apply to SE3 when it is released, with the same outcome.

Can Promethean please review this policy? Given that the viewer is available to the general public, I don't see a strong case for not allowing it to be shared via CD. Or at least allowing schools that have purchased one or more ACTIVBoards to distribute the Viewer software via a CD.

Ditto for the upcoming SE3. Please consider allowing schools who have purchased an ACTIVBoard to share the Student Edition software with their students via CD. I would love to set an assignment where the students work in groups in an on-line environment (such as a wiki) to produce an SE flipchart on a given topic. But with the current policy, not all students will be able to get a copy of SE, and hence such an assignment will not be possible.

Cheers

Rex

No. That is not the case.

The SE licence is the one intended for students of a school that has existing, licenced copies of Activsoftware. It has functions and tools beyind the Viewer that are intended to fully support student use and editing of flipcharts.

The SE software also comes on Version 3 CDs if that is ordered.

Here are the key elements of the V3 license.

You may only use the software if you are a student of a school or institution that holds valid licenses of Promethean Activstudio software.
You may not use Activstudio Student Edition for teaching or group presentation purposes with any other make of interactive whiteboard, interactive panel or projector.
You may not make the software available to 3rd parties that are not employees or students of a school or institution that does not hold licensed copies of Promethean Activstudio software.
So licensed schools should feel free to distribute the Student Edition version to their students by CD if that fits in with needs. Some schools may also want to consider making it available behind a VLE login.

The restrictions on both SE and Viewer are intended to prevent people selling/reselling it commercially or using the additional features of SE to present lessons on non-Promethean boards. Where we have proper offerings in some areas of the world.

Additionally, schools also have options to save/export flipcharts as: Word, PDF, Powerpoint, FLASH and HTML or indeed print them for access by students.

That is exactly the kind of thing SE it intended to support. It offers a range of editing facilities and Save - unlike the Viewer.

NOTE: You should note that with a lot of embedded Multimedia - a flipchart could be much bigger than the Viewer/SE download. If you have network speed restriction - rules may need to be set on flipchart file size.

Thanks, Mark

I downloaded SE3 this morning (Australia time) and saw that I was allowed to distribute it to our students via CD. I'll tell you, I was one happy chap! [clap] [clap]

Cheers
