View Full Version : Tickertapes
Tickertapes to share the learning objectives or to share messages with parents in the morning when dropping the children off! The parents in my class often look at the board for messages now! [clap]

Thanks for this, LouB...
The Tickertape is one of my favourite tools...
Anyone else any ideas for messages or ways to use tickertapes in lessons...?

How about reminders about due dates or things to bring back from home (like permission slips or signed papers from parents)?

Using the tickertape as a continuous activity .... number sequence, when children finish what they are doing this could be an extension find the next number in the sequence or what is the next prime number and children can add it.
ALSO using it for key spellings or topic words. This can be added to.

Margaret stole my thunder here. But I'm going to add my comment anyway! A teacher friend of mine told me she used the tickertape for all the "hard" spellings involved in the activity of the day. She had found that pupils continuously asked her "how do you spell ...?". This was disrupting pace and also concentration of others. Once the spellings were scrolling across the screen, the pupils didn't need to engage her at all and she could get on with her marking and drink her G & T in peace! (Only kidding about that bit!) :D

Similar theme to learning objectives, how about sharing the success criteria/WILF for a lesson - good reminder for those who were asleep when you shared it the first time! ;)

How about a 'Happy Birthday ......' banner running first thing in the morning for any child who has a birthday on that day? :)
Super idea Sarah!
My personal favourites though are the messages to parents reminding them that their children do need their reading folders and PE kits in school everyday.
We have also used them recently to highlight any changes that have occurred in the tadpole tank! (obviously not the bit about me murdering the first lot! )

Second Dugs suggestion although maybe slightly different, I use tickertapes for the keywords I want them to make sure they know by the end of the lesson.

BTW You can make text on a flipchart into a tickertape - by right clicking....
So that you could for example cut and paste a key passage from an article on the web or somewhere (or drag and drop) and turn it instantly into a tickertape - while you analyse it elsewhere on the board.

We use the ticker tape to add another number each day to our Math Their Way Calendar -Days in School. It's fun to change the speed.

Each morning I have the day's journal prompt running on a tickertape.

You could have the words of a song scrolling across the page in time with the music..
Many of these uses overlap with the Notes & Pointers ideas - sometimes you do want the message to remain onscreen as you turn to other pages in the flipchart or other applications. Other times it is only needed for a short time.
BTW did you know that you can alter the position of the tickertape on the page AND customise its appearance in lots of ways..

Hi, have just discovered the use of tickertapes[clap][clap][clap] I love it!!!!
What a fabulous resource for storywriting prompts!
Just wondered if there was any way to have three different tickertapes running at different defaults?

Thanks for this tip, mrslloyd3, and welcome to the forum!
Thanks, also, to everyone else who has added their tips to this thread...!

Well, this thread is from a while ago, but I liked this idea so much I thought I'd pass it on ...
Many of you have mentioned using the tickertape for spelling-related activities, so here's another one in that theme - use the tickertape to revise vocabulary items from the previous lesson by hiding the words in a continuous line of text. Great for warmers, fillers, early finishers, etc.
An example text would look like this:
oiealkzlemonkdmslimelonlkoiutpassionfruitldkbungra peskbhphnb
:) Have fun, hope it works for you too!
