Hi folks,
I've had a couple of trials of gestures, but I'm still having a lot of trouble gettting them to work. I've searched for threads and tried the tips, including adjusting the settings, but I still can't get them to work consistently!
Any advice from people who use them?
Cheers,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Just as a starting point, when I started using gestures I changed all the settings then couldn't get them to work. When I reset all the settings, they worked much better... the default settings seem to be the best ones, at least for me...

Hi there,

I have found that the default settings are best for me too. Rest the heel of your hand on the board and "flick" the pen from the centre outwards to one of the reference points. Have the stylus tip close to the board but don't touch the surface.

Gestures have been included in Version 3 as an alternative user interface. This is largely an experiment to gauge the usefulness of gesture technology and as such it is not enabled by default. With the advent of the Wii, this sort of user input may grow in the future.

Just occurred to me reading Pete's message...
you have to make sure the cursor is still for a moment before you flick the pen...

Thanks guys :)

Please could some one tell me what the default gesture settings are? I don't want to lose all the other changes
Cheers

Wendy, I have had the exact problem as you and was about to give up on Gestures. I might have managed to get it to work about once in 50 attempts. In desperation, I visited the Forum and saw your thread at the top! I was doing all the tips and had tried everyting in the settings, going back to the default. Still no luck. So....if all else fails, reboot the computer and ......gestures now work - EVERY time. Coincidence? Don't know. It worked so that's all that matters!

Pleased to hear that Robyn! It is far easier on a board than on the computer screen using a mouse.

In response to Wendy..
01 or 10 is Pen/Select tool toggle
03 or 30 is Next Page
05 or 50 is Colour selector
07 or 70 is Previous page

Hi Pete,

Thanks for this - but I was actually after the speed etc settings.:)

Oh, you may have needed to know the default settings for tolerance etc. As these have no units, your best bet is to go to Menu/Activstudio settings/General and click the reset defaults button. Beware that this may have some knock on effects if you have changed any other settings from default.

Wendy, the default settings are:
Tolerance 7
Size 17
Speed 30
and.....the gestures are still working every time for me! Touch wood.

Peter, what is 'the Wii"?

Wii is Nintendo's new gaming console. Wireless handheld controller - swing it like a golf club or tennis racquet, brandish like a samurai sword, 10 pin bowling etc etc.

AWESOME!

Thanks for those settings Robyn - I'll have to have another try. I still had gestures turned on this morning, and lots of weird things happened when I was writing quickly! I'll try the default settings and see if that helps.:)

I had another go today, resetting to the default values, holding the pen still and even re-booting the computer, but 1 in 50 is still about my strike rate.

Maybe its a southern hemisphere thing, like cyclones turning in the opposite direction .....

Any success, Wendy?

Same here Rex - maybe left handed teachers would have more luck in the Southern Hemisphere!:p

It really is strange. Since I got gestures finally working, they haven't missed a beat. Up until then though, they were very sporadic. I wonder what it is?

Good guess, Wendy, but alas I am a leftie ..... I think the next thing to try is standing on my head....:) Might be hard to reach the board though.

Hi !

Me too... having problems with gestures till date and have almost given up...........but after reading this thread, I am thinking of giving it one more try first thing tomorrow......... Maybe I was letting the pen nib touch the board surface all this while ? was this the problem? or was it the flick speed? let me find out....

At last its working....!( well most of them!) the key is "hold the pen nib very close but do not touch the board ".The double flicks need some more practice.... like 6060...etc... but its worth it during a customer demo...![clap]
