View Full Version : Diacritical marks and schwa
I am creating a flipchart about reading a dictionary pronunciation key, but I cannot find a way to type all of the phonetic respellings. I've found some marks in the Text Editing Toolbox under "Other": circumflex, dieresis, and marks I can use to show stressed sylables. However, I cannot find a way to make the schwa (upside-down "e"), the breve (short vowel mark), or macron (long vowel mark). Does anyone know if there's a place where these symbols are stored?
Or has someone found a better way to create pronunciation guides?

That has me stumped. I've never done it. Can you type these symbols in "Word?" If so you can use the camera tool to capture the writing. Or perhaps there is a specific font on your computer that has these symbols in it. Then you should be able to type directly in Activstudio.
Another idea: If you want an upside down "e" you can type just that letter and then rotate it.
I found a website with a table in it. Theoretically, I suppose you could capture some of these symbols with the camera tool.

You could try installing an IPA font on your computer and using that.

For information about macron fonts, and a link to a site where you can download several of these, go to this thread http://www.prometheanplanet.com/uk/server/show/nav.2361
You will need to install the font. It will then appear in the Text Edit menu, although for others to see the macron correctly they will also need to have that font OR you can snapshot the text to create an image.
That font will also be accessible to other applications you run on that computer.
