View Full Version : Scroll bar on my flp page

This is certain to have come up before, so sorry to repeat but...
Why is it that since I've got a new laptop, flps that I download from here and elsewhere appear to not fit the page and have a little scroll bar on the side. Obviously, this isn't wholly satisfactory and I can't seem to fix it except by changing page scale settings but this leaves dark grey borders and although the scroll bar goes, the page doesn't 'fit' properly.

I have the same problem, it is to do with the screen size. If you set your screen resolution (right click on the desktop, display properties) to 800x600 before you open AP then all should be ok!

I was making flipcharts at home then putting them on the network at school and being very disappointed that they were all out of sync - I fiddled around for weeks before I worked out what I needed to do!

Hope it helps

I'll give that a try. Thanks Lou.

Hi Dug, what are the screen sizes of your new laptop and the school projector?

Depending on the difference between them and the page scale setting you will get different effects.

Some examples:

If you have a widescreen laptop (eg 1280x768) then you will see fairly large side borders in 'Height Fit' or 'Best Fit' modes if the flipchart was created using 1024x768, 800x600, etc.

If you create a flipchart as 1024x768 pixels then view it on an 800x600 screen then in Best Fit, Height Fit and Width Fit it will look the same but it will appear bigger in 'Original Scale'.

In general it is best to create flipcharts using the screen size of the projector you will use and then use 'best fit' scale to edit them at home, accepting that you may see a border.

Paul

P.S. I haven't got ActivPrimary but in ActivStudio most flipchart will have small borders at the side in best fit and height fit modes as the window title takes up some space. This means that you can't use the full 1024x768 (or whatever) so the flipchart will be slightly scaled to fit. Can you switch off the title bar when maximised in ACTIVprimary?

Here's a good tip! Not sure if it's the exact same on AP but probably similar.

My laptop's screen resolution is 1280x800 and the PCs that my flipcharts are displayed are either 1280x1024 or 1024x768. (who uses 800x600 these days?!?!?!?!)

SO, when making flipcharts, try and make sure you create them at 1024x768. if you click the promethean man and go to studio settings... go to the 'flipchart' tab..

On the PC you're preparing materials on change 'default page scale' to 'best fit' and change 'default page size' to '1024 * 768'.

Hope this helps!

Hey - whats wrong with 800x600? It works beautifully - it means the tool bar in AP goes from the top of the screen to the bottom and the children don't keep asking why there is a black bit at the top of the tool bar! +wave+

Thankyou one and all for your thorough, comprehensive responses. I'm sure the problem stems from a newer, larger display on the laptop (that is at 1280x800). I will diddle about from now on and am reassured that nothing 'critical' is going on.

Hey LouB, I'm with you on this one! People always say that my toolbar "looks better" than theirs and it's all 'coz mine goes top to bottom! ;)

It's certainly coming to something when we're all admiring each others' enormous tool-bars!
Oooh err Missus!

I always tend to push for primary schools to switch their resolution to 800 x 600, not so much as a way of making the toolbar fill the screen, although bigger is better :o)

I personally feel that in this resolution text, especially when using the web, is much bigger and surely this is better for the children at the back of the class...

Kind regards

David

Ah now there's no 'black bit' in ACTIVstudio - didn't know that about ACTIVprimary!

Dave, just picked up on this thread seeking answers to the screen resolution problem, found them in your post, for which many thanks!.
You'll appreciate that not only does AP look better in 800x600 but some programs (yes, computers often run other programs) require it because it was standard when they were written. Trouble is some stuff such as googleearth suffers for it. The evils of compromise I guess. Cheers for the solution.
