View Full Version : Purple patch
Does anyone else have the progressively worse purple blotches appearing on the board as a result of projector decline. The patches appear after as little as a year's use despite frequent cleaning of all filters. They don't even go away after bulb replacement and significant disassembly and cleaning. Might it be something to do with the lens? You go to shows like Bett and everyone's got crystal clear, bright displays even in near daylight. Is the only answer replacement (decent - XGA?) projectors, or has anyone out there got a cheaper solution?

At one of the schools I visit, a projector had a purple patch at the bottom and a yellow one at the top. Apparently when the technicians came in to look they couldn't see anything wrong. I'm fairly sure it's fixed now, so I'll find out how when I can. Hope its the same thing

Try replacing the cables if you have checked lenses.

Can you tell me a little more about cleasning the lenses? Do you send the projectors off to Promethean for a clean at a cost of 200 pounds or do you do this yourself?

If you look at the small print - you will find that they recommend an (expensive) deep clean every 2 years.
My heateacher was rather surprised (as was I) that we would have to budget £400 a year for projector cleaning. You also have to get in early to get them cleaned in holiday time - otherwise no working board in your room for a month.
My purple patches are definitely dust inside the projector - you can focus the lens so that you can see the muck!

There has to be another way to do this. I've got 22 projectors. There is just no way we can afford to spend £4,400 pounds every 2 years!!! I can't even afford to buy ink!
We have huge problems with this too but our school cannot afford to have our 8 projectors sorted out. There must be some sort of cheaper solution.

Have a look for a local company
I have found a local IT firm who will come to school, remove the projector, clean and service it and come and put it back up again 5 working days later for £150.
They are at the moment finalising a clean on site service.
No price or details yet, but sounds promising
also sounds like a huge, money making, gap in the market!
Where are you, Gary? South coast I guess by your name. Your lot probably won't stretch to W.Yorkshire. How did you find a local company? Who does this sort of thing? How long does the job last before the purple returns?
So many questuions, sorry.

Hi
When sending projectors that are in warranty to local firms please make sure they are authorised to do this by Sanyo or other manufacturer. If it has been cleaned and we find something wrong it will not be covered under warranty.
There have been previous discussions about this, and comments.

Dug, glad you spotted the reference to the mighty AFC Bournemouth in my user name.
The company I am going to use is Presentation Media in Christchurch, Dorset.
I found them with a google search.
I think a deep clean is recommended every 2 years, but I am a lot more dilligent cleaning filters than I was in the past - so maybe a bit longer next time.
I do not know whether they are authorised cleaners Daniel, but my projector is now just over 2 years old - would it still be in warranty anyway?
Thanks for your input on this Gary, and thanks Daniel for the reference to last year's thread, which I read with interest.
It seems that the projection business is one with a lot of 'convenient' hidden costs.

Gary / Dug
All projectors purchased directly from Promethean come with a 3 year loan/exhange warranty from date of delivery.
Becta projectors, which I think you Dug have a few of, comes with 3 year onsite warranty and 1 free bulb.

OK, the man came to clean the filter the other day, so I asked him about purple patches. They are caused by dust getting into the projectors, but it takes more than a filter change to remove them - they need stripping down and cleaning on the inside- about a 3 hour job. We (apparently) have a contract for them to do this, but as it requires projectors to be taken away, they replace it temporarily with another- which created a large backlog/waiting list. He also needed to be persuaded of the need to do the work- "It's got to be over 1/3 covered", so it's not an ideal solution. Contract is through the county, so I presume it is Promethean authorised.
He also told me that the brightness will fade with time, and replacing bulbs, cleaning etc. will never restore the original brightness back- so if you have a new projector make the most of it!:(
Hi Dave
This is exactly what we were told too but when we asked how much it would cost to do a 'deep clean' it was £400 per projector and no one else would touch them while they are in warranty.
Nightmare!

Hi +wave+ ,
Just though I would share this with you all!
We have had recurrant problems with very large purple/blue patchs appearing in the corner or side of the image. This has happened to at least 4 of our sanyo projectors the usual reason reason is something along the lines of one of the LCD panels either 'burning out', 'bleeding' or failing.
Its also a fualt that seems to take along to time fix, in some cases 2 months if not more!
I do run a good routine of cleaning the filter every 4 weeks or sooner is the departments that and heavy users!
Just currious to see if anyone else experienced this problem?
Ta!
