Hi

No you can't download it - it is too big! It is actually a complete overhaul and significant changes have been made to tools/functionality/interface.

You will love it!

We are charging a £20 handling fee as you will also receive, as part of the cd, Kartouche Composer and Spark Space (an idea mapping software). If you ring Blackburn 01254676921 somebody will be able to help you.

mmm yes too big..... and a £20 pound handling charge. not eactly the free upgrade as was promised. if it is too big to host on your server can i sugest using a p2p system such as bittorrent to distributite it which would remove the strain on your servers and move it over to the clients. this would remove the need for u to waste any time packing stuff.

I think that a P2P solution would be overkill, especially one as user independent as BitTorrent.
The demand for the software by users who also use Bittorrent would seem to be negligible.

Also, if I'm correct, AS2 will be on at least 2 CDs. The time and bandwidth required is well worth the shipping fee in my opinion.

It is not too big to host on our servers - it is too big and unmanagable to download and would require an authentication system. There are 2 CDs in the pack so a potential download in excess of 1.2gb is far too much for most people!

This version of the software will have to be installed by CD, future upgrades will be made available as web downloads.

The £20 fee merely covers handling costs of getting the CD to you. We think that it is a reasonable level of charge that does indeed give you a free upgrade.

Hi there!
I don't want us to be seen as backing down on free software upgrades. So I will go to some length to explain the costs involved and the reason for the £20 handling fee. We have potentially tens of thousands wanting ACTIVstudio 2.
CD and Jewel case
Duplicating and printing 2 CD's
Manual input of order
Printing and filing of order
Printing delivery note
Manual update of customer records
Jiffy bag and postage
Printing of invoice
Processing of payment
Bank charges for paying in cheque
Licence fee for your free copy of Spark Space
Licence fee for your free copy of Kar2ouche Composer.
I can assure you that £20 does not cover the material and human resource costs and we make a loss on every CD we ship out. So imagine if we shipped a CD out at a cost to us of say £20 and we received 30,000 upgrade requests. It would cost us £600,000 to provide your upgrade. At least this way we will stay in business to provide you with further upgrades!
I hope this helps clarify the situation.

adam P2P systems typically don't work at all with the kind of Internet connectivity many schools have through Regional Broadband Consortia. However HTTP(S) or FTP would not be a problem. Either as straight files or ISO CD images.

OK I get peeps points, i dont mind people making money outta there work its just not what was said. anyways ordered today. not sure what u ment mcdev by user independednt. the way i interperate it is that u mean that users wouldnt know how to access / download it. well if the tech support people in your school dont know how, then you dont have tech support people. also bit torrent uses a hashing system to make sure that the download is correct which is the authentication system i guess cliff was talking about. unless he ment only letting authorised people have the torrent in the first place. which is more unmanagable. mpe although bttorrent works fine with us at work, you could always download it at home, it takes me 2 hrs to download 2 iso's worth of data there.

anyways have fun

The £20 is very reasonable. In years to come, downloading may well be the way to go, but I think for most the CD option is still the most practical for distribution purposes. Anyway, if you downloaded it at home, wouldn't you then have to burn it on to CD's and then take it into school to install it there?!

there's probably not enough people to run a torrent on the file, anyway.

The bottom line is that ActivStudio 2 is well worth whatever nominal charge Promethean impose for the media.

We have waited a long tiime for it, but it is a superb product.

Congratulations to all those involved in its development.

Hi John

Long time - no hear from you graemlins/wave.gif

Thanks for your kind words of support, Promethean have put a considerable amount of development with associated costs into ACTIVstudio 2 and soon ACTIVprimary 2. The charges imposed do only cover handling costs of getting the CD's out to users.

I would have to agree that the £20 fee was well worth it especially as you could pay for it with e-learning credits graemlins/clap.gif . ACTIVstudio2 is really good - perfect for getting other staff bitten by the interactive whiteboard bug! :D
