View Full Version : Activating a resource using an action

Having put a resource into the library (hopefully) I'd like to be able to get it quickly onto a flipchart page by clicking on a link to it - i.e. creating an action. I know that I can drag it into my toolbox but I might only need a certain object in one topic a year and don't want it permanently in my toolbox.
I've tried creating a button to click on (well it's a rectangle with text on top really, but I have imagination!) , and setting an action for it but you have very few actions available under AS2. I've tried to 'open an embedded document or file' and to 'open a document or file' but these open the resource in a separate window rather than adding the resource to the page.
Can I do it or do I need the developer edition (when available)?

Not sure what type of resource you are referring to, but you could try dragging the thumbnail from the Library onto the Flipchart page. Click off it so the 'handles' disappear. You can then click the thumbnail and it will bring up the resource on the Flipchart page, as long as you have Actions enabled.

Sounds promising but I don't quite understand. To complete the picture I'm just trying to get a line (or group of lines, or sometimes lines and text) annotation onto the page.
Doing what you say puts the annotation onto the page as you would normally do with a resource. I think you're then saying that I can now click on the thumbnail back in resources and it will put a second copy of the resource on the page. I can't get it to do this even though actions are enabled.
This is interesting to me but not exactly what I was trying to do. I'd be glad of a further explanation of this if possible.
I don't really want the resource library covering the left of the screen in the middle of a lesson, so I was trying to program an action to bring the annotations that I might want onto the page when needed. I know that I can roll the library up and down, but this is all extra key presses. I was just trying to create a simple 'button' to make it easier.

OK - I see what you want to do. Ignore previous - that was for other types of objects.
An easy way to do this is to 'park' the object (including the grouped items) off to the side of the page, perhaps with an arrow attached so you can pull it onto the page when you need it. A quick action to ungroup the items making up the group, and you can use your collection.

Could you put an action on an object to open a flipchart which already displays your resources?

With regard to Hilary's suggestion I made an offscreen "do dah" object type thing:confused: ...
I think you'll get it when you see it in a flipchart.
If you think it is of any use drag it in to your resource library. [clap]

That looks really good Peter. Thanks for that. It's a good idea and a perfectly good work-around. I'm still dreaming of the added functionality of the developers edition though!
I couldn't open another flipchart with the resource in it because they're possible lines for a fairly general purpose economics diagram - I want to have a selection of lines that I can add to my flipchart if needed.

Perhaps it would be helpful if Promethean could make it so that we could drag annotations onto the page notes. Or have a "G" next to the "N" in the blue bar with a graphics palette you could customise for a particular task in case you needed components?

Peter - I have just tried out your do-dah. That's a really good idea. The tab is great for writing on and I can see it having lots of uses. [clap]
