Do we have a date for the release of AP 2.5 yet?
It seemed to be working well at BETT - is there much else to do with it?

Hi Gary
We are all very excited about the new version of ACTIVprimary but I'm sorry to say there is still no date confirmed for its release. On a brighter note I did hear this morning that we are very close, so please check back soon...
Kindest regards

A revised page is now posted that indicates the upgrade path you have to take in order to successfully upgrade depending upon your current version.
I will ask about Mac versions and post back the response in the Mac forum.

Okay..... thanks for pointing this out Alison.... I kept meaning to tell people about this. It is really easy....
Click on Promethean Man > Manage Resources > and then you will see a page which allows you to move things around if you want to within in your resources. At the top of this window are four icons. Click on the far right one and follow on screen instructions. Would be grateful if someone could confirm that these are enough instructions bearing in mind some people maynot be as au fait with the menus etc as I am.
Enjoy![clap]

Yes that makes sense Margaret - just a warning to people though if you are impatient like me it did take a while to re-index and I was half way through sending a message on the forum saying "how long does it take to re-index?" and then it finished.
What a great addition [clap] [clap] - very very useful.
Thanks for the flipchart of new features - again very good to get a quick overview - even though I haven't had time to play with them all yet. ;)

Well done you guys - you really do listen to your customers. :D :D :D

Design Mode (Prom Man>click on his friend!) then right click on the page and you will get the chance to "Insert link object". You navigate to your .swf file and hey presto.
Hope that helps +wave+ and puts you out of your desperation!!
Thanks for that. I' d tried last night in a rush and forgot to check the 'placeholder' button and so only had a link appear (as would've happened in the old version). Now I'm up and away!
Now I'm away with the embedding thing. I hope this isn't too technical, but people should know about this...
If you like things like the flash files on the BBC Schools section and have a slow or unreliable internet connection at school, you can embed them at home or in advance for use at another time (see the attached one I've just made for Y4/5 - hope it works!).
Credit should go to Michele Horsborough who showed me how.
Anyway..
1. View the flash file in Internet explorer.
2. Choose 'Tools' menu in Internet Explorer.
3. Choose 'Internet Options'.
4. Choose 'Settings' in the 'General' section.
5. Choose 'View Files' (which will show you a long list of cookies etc). You are looking for the flash file (identified with a little 'f' icon and unlikely to have an obvious name). NB If you get an unbelievably long list it might be worth deleting them all (they're only temporary anyway) and then starting again at step 1.
6. Copy the flash file and then paste it into your documents somewhere (I made a special folder for flash files).
7. In AP2.5, in design mode, right click the page and choose 'Insert link object...'
8. Click on the little grey square with 3 dots to browse for your flash file.
9. When you've found it, click 'open'.
10. Don't forget to choose 'placeholder' before finally clicking 'ok'
11. Resize it etc, return to presentation mode and Bob's your uncle.
I'm going to use this particular one in conjunction with Activote because it seems made for it!
Good luck.

I finally remembered to bring my laptop in to school to upgrade to 2.5...only problem is, it won't let me use any tool that needs to use a pen e.g. fraction tool or handwriting recognition. Why is this? Is there any way to fix it without uninstalling and reinstalling? If I try and click on any of these buttons it says "This feature is not available" ????
Also, off topic, but wondering if anyone can help. How do I find out who my TLC is?
LisaD

These two tools are only available when connected to an Activboard. Are you connected to an Activboard?
Lisa
Alison
14-03-2006, 07:04 PM
Uh...no! That would be why then! How come they only work when connected? It's a pain if you're trying to make a flipchart at home. Oh well. At least it's a good excuse as to why I don't have to do the work at home! :-/
In reply to Margaret's post above. You and anyone else can come and visit us anytime. We're at Holmfirth JIN School in W.Yorkshire (01484 222480). We are using boards in every class from Nursery to Y6, voting in every class, lots of brilliant and innovative teachers etc. However, we are in a bit of a Promethean desert (all our neighbours are sm##tboard users) and we would welcome some Promethean colleagues coming and sharing in some good practice.
I also teach ICT to teacher trainees at Leeds University (where I have a Promethean board-thankfully). All the student teachers are disappointed with using Sm##t when they have seen in lectures what Promethean can do.
Hoping to hear from some of you soon.

Hi Alison
Generally I wouldn't need to use the handwriting recognition away from a board - my mouse control is not that good! plus, most text I prepare in advance I would type anyway. However, with regard to the fraction creator - which could be useful to have available away from the board - you can attach an ACTIVtablet to your laptop/computer at home. This basically works in the same way as a graphics pad and 'tricks' your computer into thinking there is a board attached. I have one attached to my laptop at home and then I don't see the watermark either.
Your local sales person or TLA should be able to point you in the right direction for getting one of these, if not phone head office on 0870 241 3194.
Hope this helps! [clap]

I love the new 'video record' tool in AP2.5 and my mind is racing with possible uses. This tool is so much more useful than conventional video footage. One use that I'm exploring at the moment is:
1) Demonstrate a mathematical written calculation.
2) Child completes a calculation on the board using the same written method (but this time record it with the video tool).
3) Child could then take the video file away (home?) or file can be emailed to parents and then used as a 'reminder' for the child when they practise calculations for homework etc.
Written calculation videos like this could be made available to all/any parents in support of our sharing the methods we use in maths.
Just one thing... It would be great if you could integrate or simultaneously record sound alongside it for the extra verbal explanation that may help.

Just in case I'm not the only one...
I have been sent a fix because the Named Mode of voting didn't work with AP2.5 - it also seemed to fix a problem that I had with the camera tool not working (or maybe that was just on my home PC as I hadn't tried it at school before I installed the fix).
If anyone else is having similar problems I recommend getting in touch with those helpful folk at technical support! [clap]

Dug I will ring you.... :Your reputation goes before you! +wave+
Actually, I was wrong - the fix doesn't seem to have correct4ed the camera problem. Getting a white screen with the selection box avilable when I try to capture, rather than the screen I'm trying to capture from...

Lara,
what OS are you running on when you get the camera problem - is it 98 or ME??
98 - new machines coming within the month so all will be rosy then!
Louise Chew
17-03-2006, 10:07 AM
yes, the new machines will solve this camera problem - its a pesky little bug to track down as it only happens on some 98 machines

I've followed your instructions for embedding a flash file (one of the BBC science clips files) in AP2.5, but when I try to run it nothing happens. I can't see what I am doing wrong.
Any ideas???
I have clicked the placeholder button by the way.
Sorry, not sure how to help. It just seemed to work the few goes I've had at it. I do know of other people who had a problem with the flash files not appearing in the internet folder, but you seem to've got beyond that bit. Are you sure it's the relevant file? (Usually identified by the little 'f' for flash.) It should definitely work with the Numeracy strategy ITPs which are flash files and are downloadable from the Standards Site, so... try embedding one of those to see if that works (which will eliminate AP2.5 as a possible culprit).
Don't know what else to suggest.
Of course I should also refer you to Margaret's post above regarding copyright etc.

What's happened to 2.5? Why is it not available for download any more?
I've been using it at work, and really enjoying the added functionality - but was really disappointed when I couldn't download it at home this evening.

I wonder if its got anything to do with a very annoying problem we've got on half of our boards in which the pen decides to act as a 'clear annotations' tool. I've had to uninstall AP2.5 and reinstall AP2 which has been a proper pain in the backside. Hope you tech people are working hard on sorting this out.

Hi
Well this must be the quickest response in history to a problem!! :D
You will need to uninstall the program and then reinstall making sure you tick the right box or choose the right option from the drop down.
Don't feel too stupid even those of us that should know better have done it - more than once ;)

Hi,
When AP uninstalls it can only uninstall anything it originally installed. Therefore anything that you had added it cannot uninstall.
However, if you feel very anxious about that... and I don't blame you  Just move your "myflipcharts" folder within My Documents onto the desktop and then you know you have "protected" them!!!
Hope this helps!

Incorrect serial number problem!
I installed version 2.1.9 then version 2.5.78 like it said on the site but now on some machines I get an "incorrect serial number" message when I open AP2.
It then takes me to the screen where you put in your serial number and it's added 4 digits on the end of it!
If I delete these 4 digits it then accepts my serial number and everything is fine again....until I close it and re open it OR go to the Promethean man -> ... -> About ACTIVprimary 2 -> Details where the extra 4 digits have appeared.
So far this has happened on 3 of the 20 machines I've upgraded.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it keeps doing the same thing.
Any advice?
Thanks
Tim

we recently changed to 20 digit serial keys, with a slight fault. The 16 digit keys should still work.
You can try reentering your key with no hyphens and see how that goes. You can also go to: c:\documents and settings\all users\activ software\activstudio 2\ and delete the as2pe.dat, then launch Activstudio 2 again and enter the serial key with no hyphens.
