View Full Version : *.FLP unable to open properly in Sharepoint

We are having issues with all our *flp files on our virtual learning system in our school.
When trying to open up through Sharepoint, Windows XP thinks the file is compressed and thus wants to save the file first before opening. This is also happening on Vista and Windows 7.

Looking back through the forums there was a post 3 years ago, but the suggestions there have not resolved the problem.
*.flipchart files open up without any problems, but converting the 10K of *.FLP via Active Inspire would be a nightmare!

Any ideas??

Thanks

Jonathan.

This is a MIME issue on the server.

The server administrator can add a MIMEtype for .flp files that will prevent them downloading as .zip files.

Support info. to send them here:

Temporary alternatives may include using "save as' function or renaming the file extension back to .flp

Unfortunately the MIME type info has not fixed the issue.
The *.flp files are still being treated as compressed files.

Any other suggestions??

Success we have found a solution to the problem.
So this is for anyone else who uses sharepoint and is experiencing problems with flp filenames. (when MIME type is not the issue)

Install a 3rd party zip program and it seems to removes the anomoly of the files being treated as a compressed file.
simple as that.

Yes that works but that is not a perfect solution. Especially if you have chosen winzip as it is actually not free and you could get into trouble for using it illegally (assuming you haven't bought it).

I assume you are running Sharepoint on an IIS server which makes this extremelly difficult. Usually if you are running Apache, you would be able to create the MIME type on the server side through a .htaccess file.

I am not an expert on IIS but as far as I know there is no htaccess equivalent. Try playing around in IIS' settings - there might be an area you can enter MIME types.

Summary: It is far easier to fix this issue server-side than to fix it client-side.

Ok, I'm not sure if this is even the right forum to ask this, but I am having no luck opening a file that is a "FLIPCHART file" in activstudio professional. The icon is different with 2 pens compared to the regular "activstudio flipchart" which has no pens in the icon. I have activstudio professional V3. Do I need a different program?

That is correct. if the file has an extension .flipchart that is an ActivInspire file and Activstudio cannot open that. However, you should be able to upgrade for free to ActivInspire!
