I have my classes set up in the database with ActivInspire and I assign PIN# to my kids so i can collect their data on whatever we do that day. I then ran into a few problems...when i changed classes and had the kids reregister as them, their names would not show up as they answered questions, it was the names of the students in the previous class. How can i fix this problem?

Also, is there a way that the kids can answer a test on the reponders and move at their own pace? I saw something about self paced learning but i have not seen anything about how to use it?

thanks for the help,

Casey,
I made a similar post as your's about a week ago and had no reply from anyone. It is a pain. Also, have you noticed how the scoring spreadsheet keeps a running total of all question that a register student has answered. This might be useful to somebody, but if you are trying to give a grade on a given flipchart you still have to calculate your own percentage because of all the data that is kept in the system from previous flipchart questions. That is a pain!

Well good luck with your question and I will watch to see if anyone else comments.

If you are using your activotes with different classes you will need to set your database up in classes and put the students into the correct class. Then when the next class comes in you will have to re-assign the activotes by clicking on the class and choosing assign devices by pin. The old allocation will be gone and the devices will be registered to the new class. When you finish with the class and view the results you will have to remove the results from the flipchart so that your scores for each class will show up on a separate spreadsheet. Hope this helps!!!!:)

Thanks for the reply back. I reassign each class using the PIN but if the previous class had 25 kids and the next one has 20, then the extra 5 kids still show up. I have not played with the spreadsheet par of the test. I have created a quiz type where i had preset the correct answers, but i would only use multiple choice. this is because when you text an answer, if it is not exact then it will read it as wrong.

has anybody found out how to use self paced learning?

I am also running into the issue of overlapping classrooms, even though I have assigned each student to a class and pull up that list to assign pins. The current list will show students from the last class if there are fewer in this one.
--------------
I have started playing with Self-paced learning and it has some potential although I think the setup of the questions will take some getting used to for the students. If you go to the Insert menu, there is a box for Insert Self Paced question set. You will type in all of your questions here. For each one you go through the selection of ? type, answers, etc. When you start the vote, the questions will show up on the Expressions screen, not the flipchart. You will probably want to walk the students through how they answer on a different screen than the question. Set one up and take a look at your screen to see what I mean.

I have yet to give an actual assessment using them as it turned out my kids needed more practice on how to answer the questions. That is on the agenda for next week :-)

Hi,
If your previous class had more students than your current class, then after assigning by PIN, there will be a few unused devices that will remain named as the previous class.

For example if you had 24 students in period 1 and 20 students in period 2.
When period 2 students are assigned to their devices using PIN, you will potentially have 4 devices leftover from period1 and their names will show in the voting browser.
Here is the good news on how to handle this in Inspire 1.3
Once good enhancement of version 1.3 is how absent students are handled during voting.
You simply click on the names of the students to deactivate devices who are either absent or are from the previous class or specific students who you want to purposely exclude from voting ( perhaps because they were being cheeky or playing games". This will put a line across those names and the the box will be shaded darker.

Now when you vote, the voting session will not wait for the deactivated devices to respond. Even if students now try to vote using a deactivated devices, it will not let them hit the send key or make a selection. On the settings page, if you keep the box " count answered device" unchecked, then your voting data will only give stats for students who actually are in class and voted using a authorized device.
Hope this helps

My problem is similar, but I cannot find anyone who has asked exactly the same question. I was just trying it out Assigning students to Devices and was able to create 2 classes and assign students. However, when I wished to go back to having the devices display the standard name (in this case H1 and H2), I was unable to do so. I removed all of the students and all of the classes and the names still appear instead of the generic device names. HELP!!!

As you can see, I'm a "newbie" so please take my advice with a grain of salt.

I haven't set up a database yet -- I'm still trying to figure out the non-teacher time way to do that (I work with High Schoolers who are proficient at texting).

As to the current thread.

I have found that:
Issue 1 = Extra kids in class = I have to tinker with the registration each class. You can start a class and have everyone register their devices (I'm not sure how this works with the database). Then, go to Voting Browser, then to Register Devices (Icon looks like a tally sheet). Click on the ActivExpression Icon and remove all student devices that are currently not in the class.
Issue 2. = Previous tally is included = Before using the flipchart for multiple classes, go to the Browser view, then click on Voting Browser, then click on Results Browser [. . .]. You will then have to clear that information.

Hope this helps
