I am trying to upgrade my board firmware so that I can utilise ActiveArena
1. All I can find is instructions for PC
2. the prefpane in mac does not reveal an upgrade option for firmware
Am I missing something obvious? How do you upgrade the firmware of the board if you have a mac?
Currently running MacOS 10.5
Firmware 3.24

I ran into this problem also... you need to be logged in as a user with admin permissions in order to have the upgrade firmware button active. Also note that when you plug in a board or hub, only the first user (admin or teacher) who accesses the hub after a restart can "see" the hub. After upgrading the firmware, you'll have to restart and log in as the user who is going to use the board/hub. The PC directions can be followed for a Mac - you just have to use some PC-to-Mac translation skills.

Thanks for the reply
Unfortunately it does not help - I am an admin user and am the only one who uses the board, and still no upgrade button

I connected to a board this morning while having admin privileges. When opening the ActivManager control panel, the board's information showed up. Once I highlighted the line with the board's information, the "Upgrade Firmware" button was enabled. I am using OSX 10.6.1 and drivers 5.2.7.
It did take over 30 seconds for the board to be recognized with 10.6.1, but once it was recognized, everything worked as expected.

No luck yet - this is all I (get see attachment)
I assume that if my firmware version is 3.24 then I can upgrade my board
My board is the 90" ProActiv board

Your image is of the System Preference window for Activboard - this is the problem.
Firmware is updated from the ActivManager's "Control Panel". You access the ActivManager through the icon in the Apple Menu bar. The icon has a red X through it if no Promethean hardware is attached. You can see the icon at the top in the attached image. The attached image shows a hub attached (am at home with no access to a board). You highlight the device type whose firmware you want to update - if you have admin permissions the "Upgrade" is available.
If the ActivManager icon is not in your Apple Menu Bar, your driver package is not installed right. The icon should appear each time you restart/login.

Here is an image from an ActivBoard I just took while having admin privileges - note the "Upgrade" button is now active.
Also, the ActivManager icon in the Apple Menu Bar is a drop-down list which allows you to display the "Control Panel" window (which is the window shown in the attached image).
This should get you going.
