View Full Version : Using activestudio with MFL teaching

I have (possibly rather foolishly) agreed to do some training in the use of IWB etc. with the languages department of my school. As I am a mathematics teacher, my knowledge of teaching languages is limited to the occasional cover lesson. Whilst several of the techniques that I use with activestudio are fairly generic, or at least adaptable, I wondered if anyone had any good or unusual ideas for using activestudio to teach languages that I can pass on.

If you haven't already looked in the resources section of the Promethean UK website, there may be some useful ideas in there. Follow the link below, then click Modern Foreign Languages.

I've posted a few ActivStudio2 flipcharts for MFL - mainly Spanish - some GCSE and some special needs on the http://www.tre.ngfl.org.uk site - you can search for them under MFL link and then my name. For most of them I've written notes so you just need to enable this facility to see how I've used each page.
I've found the following really useful:
1. using the spotlight and reveal tools to slow reveal pictures/words
2. using the camera tool to obtain pictures from the web
3. using the above to create hyperlinks to websites
4. using the countdown tool to create a competitive element and asigning a sound to the clock when it comes to the end of the countdown.
5. using the dice tool for practising numbers sums (cross-curricular to your area!) - you can use two+ dice and do additions, subtractions, divisions, times etc
6. using the Blockbusters and Dominoes games - see examples on tre.ngfl website
7. putting 6 or more pictures on one flipchart - drilling the vocabulary - repetition, true/false, loud/soft etc then creating missing picture flipcharts by duplicating the page and using the eraser tool to hide a different one in turn
8. using the highligher tool to analyse text - picking out verbs/tenses/adjectives/nouns etc
Hope these ideas are useful to you :)
I agree with the last message about checking out the resources site at Promethean although there is no Spanish content at the moment and quality is a bit patchy!

Thanks James
With your permission I will also use your reply to demonstrate how useful the forum can be! Many of the ideas you have are fairly generic and some I already use in maths, but it's good to know what other ideas people have.

This is nothing to do with anything.... BUT I went to Walton High School and was part of the first cohort in '68. Mr Day was the head but can't remember any of the MFL teachers.... Mr Gregory was my tutor!
