I'm trying to import my class lists into Inspire. I exported them from my gradebook in CSV, but when I try to import them into Inspire, everything is listed on one line. Some information is in its own box. Sometimes, two pieces are in a box. I know how to Map the columns, but I can't get the names into the columns. Someone help?????
I'm including a shot of what it looks like when I save as CSV and import.
Hello,
It appears that the problem is in your CSV file.
What is the name of your gradebook software ?
It appears that export from your gradebook is not really creating a a true CSV file and hence your fields are merging.
I have attached a sample CSV file for you. It has 3 fields, first, last and studentID.
You can ignore the student ID field if you like.
Open the attached csv file and remove the existing names, but do not remove the header fields.
Then cut and paste your student first and last names. You can delete the Student ID field if you dont care about it.
Next save this file as csv file again.
Next import this csv file.
Now this is the important part....you will need to ignore the first row but clicking it...since this is a header. Next click on the "not mapped "drop down menu and select "Forename" for first name and "Last Name " for last name.
Next click "import". All your students will now be imported.
Now create a new class and call it what ever you like.
Then you can multiple select all these imported students and then click the "left arrow" to put them in this class.
I have attached a screenshot for you to see.

Interesting thing about that... I imported the file you sent me just to try it out, and it worked exactly like it's supposed to. Then, I took that exact same file and changed the names to my student names, saved it, and imported it, and it goes back to my original problem.
We use PowerTeacher, but I've tried typing them directly into an Excel file and saving it as CSV, but it's not working. I assume this is User error (ID10T?) but I'm following the exact same steps and just changing the names from the one you sent me.
Are you using Microsoft Excel on a Windows platform?
If so, you will need to save the file using "file save as other"....and then navigate through a whole list of choices until you find *csv and save. It will warn you about losing some info...Say yes...and it should now save it as a csv file.
There is no need to type the students names manually. You can simple cut and paste from excel.
Let me know if that works..I think the problem is happening when you are doing "save as" process in Microsoft Excel.

I copied and pasted the names directly over the example. I hit SAVE, so it should save it exactly as the same file type as you gave me. I'm not using the Windows platform. I have Microsoft Excel for OSX.

I have 3 CSV choices: CSV, Windows Comma Separated, and MS-DOS Comma Separated. I used the first one.
